Weird and annoying problem - Network Timeout on My Sites Only!

I wonder if anyone can help me please. For the past two days I have not been able to access two of my own websites but can it appears access any other site I wish to visit. I am currently working on two sites that are on a new host (hobby, not commercial). I won't post the urls here as they are still in development.

These sites can be accessed anywhere, apart from my house when they timeout. I have a PDA and have tried through GPRS at home - fast load, no problem, tried with the wireless connection on the PDA on my home network, it times out - this seems to narrow it down to either the Linksys wireless router (no changes made to set up, worked fine for years, no filtering settings set) or Virgin Media servers. I have not needed any proxy settings up to now - having read on a forum that it may be something to do with Proxy settings, on my laptop I changed settings yesterday morning to webcache.virginmedia.com on port 8080 - it immediately solved the problem, then the problem returned last night. However, as the webcache settings were on one computer, not my home network, I suspect it has to be something to do with VM or the wireless router but not sure what?

The websites are plain Joomla, education/research focused (ie no adult or other questionable content - one is just the brand new site with the template and little content) - would the VM network block the IP (as they are on shared hosting, same server, different package) somehow for some reason? And if yes, how do I resolve as I have lost two days trying to do updates?

Many thanks

Re: Weird and annoying problem - Network Timeout on My Sites Only!

are your servers located in the bluesquare datacenter ?

for the past 6 months people have been having issues conecting and bluesquare blame virgin and typical virgin deny its them and its the whole world at fault cause their network NEVER has any problems ...
from what ive read its something to do with a virgin switch that drops traffic depending on what and who but im not technical enough to explain further but anyone who can explain
" SYN packets are sent and received at the other end, and SYN ACK's are sent back, but aren't received at this end."

Re: Weird and annoying problem - Network Timeout on My Sites Only!

It appears that the answer to your question is yes, "Servers are located in world-class Blue Square Datacenter based in Maidenhead which is 20 Miles West of London, UK." - how do I resolve this please?

I can access from any computer not going through my Virgin Media home connection (and indeed tried through one of the anyonymise services as well without a problem), therefore it does appear to be isolated to the VM end - though strangely I can ping the server etc and it respondings in 13 MS or something like that, but when I try loading the page it times out?

I have been with this host for 5 months now without issue and have only had the issue for the past couple of days.

Many thanks

as far as i know you cant virgin deny the problem and blame bluesquare for blocking virgin ip's even though i explained a block would be permanent not random through the day
if you do a trace route youll see that after the tele-ic-1 switch the next step is a static.virginmedia ip and look at how high the time is ... mine will be about 30ms by the time it goes through the hops and jump to 200-300ms at that 1 point
all i know and my knowledge is very very limited is that its so busy it cant handle all traffic so it drops what it decides are unimportant data but if your using online games or anything that needs acknowledgment your screwed it drops packets so you have to start again and again and if the connection drops transfering data the data becomes corrupt
watch your bandwidth aswell because if you pay youll find your using more and could get charged for extra bandwidth you dont think you used

Re: Weird and annoying problem - Network Timeout on My Sites Only!

I have run pings and tracert's - there do not appear to be any problems, yet I cannot get these two sites to load - using the same route, how can the pings and tracerts get through to the sites yet the sites will not load? Using an external proxy server, they connect and load instantly. This has only been happening since Wednesday and is extremely annoying! It isn't my computer, as I have tried all four in the house and they all have the same problem. My Linksys wireless router and the modem have been booted and rebooted, all to no effect.

Who within VM can resolve this please?

It seems that something broke this week and I feel sure that it cannot just be me - is it just a coincidence that I cannot access my own sites?

Many thanks

Re: Weird and annoying problem - Network Timeout on My Sites Only!

There are over a dozen of Data centers facing this problem, but only we have managed to convince Virgin Media Engineers to solve this problem. We get short answers from them telling us that the problem has been fixed and we keep on replying back with more proof for further troubleshooting.

Hopefully we will get this problem sorted in next few days. Please check :-

Re: Weird and annoying problem - Network Timeout on My Sites Only!

I am so glad to hear that someone may be on to this (though looking at your thread, this seems to have been going on since at least March - clearly not a priority for VM!). If it is any help, please find below the final stages of the tracert that seems to narrow down where the problem is:

8 28 ms 15 ms 21 ms tele-ic-1-as0-0.network.virginmedia.net [62.253.
184.2]
9 137 ms 199 ms 204 ms 114-14-250-212.static.virginmedia.com [212.250.1
4.114]

Many thanks

Re: Weird and annoying problem - Network Timeout on My Sites Only!

as i thought its the same as mine after tele-ic-1 it hits the static ip and thats where the issues are ... they sent me a copy of my notes saying its blueyonders fault by blocking virgin ip's

use a vpn or proxy it works fine so that proves its a virgin issue but they wont admit that their perfectly working network has problems ... good luck getting it fixed but 7 months have passed and its the same so either find another host or isp or put up with it
