XP update issues

My mate has just installed xp updates on his pc and now his sound doesn't work and there are vertical yellow bands on the monitor screen, any ideas what happened here? He only has 512mb of ram and I know that xp needs more than this, could this be a factor?

I dont think the RAM would be the problem here even if it is on the low side.
Can he use system restore to get back to where he was before updates.

Maybe he should check if there are any updated drivers for his graphics and sound too.

system restore to before the updates then be choosy over which you install. could be new drivers the system does not like. My spare 7100 gfx card does not like the driver M$hq throws at it same could have happened here

Hmm, he's tried the system restore but it made no difference.

check cables? try different drivers not ness new ones just different. How many updates were installed?
