php coding software

Hi
I've been using trusty notepad in windows and text editor on ubuntu. I wanted to find out if there were other products out there that could help with create php pages.

I'm looking for both windows and linux versions. So anythign you could recommend I will be happy to try.

Thanks for the help.

Re: php coding software

Zend Studio is good, but expensive if you want a legit version.

Aptana is the best free one I have seen (it is based on Eclipse though which some people don't like).

I think Aptana is Windows only, but Netbeans is Linux and Windows compatible (its coded in Java so its a bit slower than a native application).

Notepad++ for syntax highlighting.

Re: php coding software

I have heard about notepad ++ and it does look like it could be better than notepad but I was hoping from something more like dreamweaver or some similar.

Hi punky,

Thanks they all look pretty good. I'm going to download them and give them a proper testing. Just for future reference Aptana is multi platform (Mac, Linux and Windows). I might end up using this specially because it is cross platform.

Re: php coding software

Cheers for that.

I definitely recommend it because it has all the autocomplete/intellisense/hints stuff you need. It also has plugins for subversion and FTP connections so you edit files directly on FTP servers. I do like that.

Re: php coding software

Notepad ++ works great as a text editor. That you can see some of the syntax highlighted in colours and you can see some stuff with a bit of layout so you can identify blocks of code makes life easier than a basic editor. It works well especially if you just need a quick change to simple code.

Re: php coding software

I use ScITE - it is useful for many languages and has syntax highlighting

Re: php coding software

I hate ScITE with a passion.

For windows, I recommend Notepad++, its not WYSIWYG though. But its an awesome text editor with syntax hilighting, file format selection (macOS format, DOS format, Unix format - all use different line ends), block collapsing...

For Linux, I use gVIM, but its worth noting that all VIM based editors have a steep learning curve, but once learned, they are brutally powerful.
