Just out of a sudden, my CDROM isn't detected by BIOS anymore
Hi,
Just like that, my cdrom wasn't detected at startup and not recognized or detected by bios (and not by windows either). No changes were made to the system or hardware.
It is set as master on IDE 1
I have:
tried reseating cables
tried a new cable
I have tried a brand new drive
I have tried it on IDE 2
Nothing is working.
Please, if someone have an idea on what I could try to solve this problem, I would be very grateful.
Thanks!
System:
Motherboard MSI K8N Master2-FAR (MS-9620)
Chipset (nvidia nForce Professional 2200)
Award BIOS typ Phoenix - Award WorkstationBIOS v6.00PG
Windows XP professional sp 3
amd opteron dual core x2
2047 gb ram

Re: Just out of a sudden, my CDROM isn't detected by BIOS anymore
When you say it's not detected by the BIOS, have you tried going into the bios and doing an autodetect.
EDIT: Thinking about it, you say your CD-ROM is normally master on IDE 1. I take it that your hard drives are SATA, is it possible that your IDE interfaces have somehow got turned off in the BIOS.

Re: Just out of a sudden, my CDROM isn't detected by BIOS anymore
Yes, it is set to auto in BIOS, first boot is also set to CDROM.
Edit:
HD is SATA yes, and both IDE interfaces are enabled in BIOS
I am really scratching my head as to what the problem is. Would it perhaps be worth to try resetting bios to optimized defaults or maybe that won't matter much?

If you've made sure that IDE is definably switched on in the BIOS and autodetection fails with new IDE cables and on a known working optical drive then I agree with Zing, looks like your board is starting to fail.

Both controllers dying at the same time?
I haven't tried fail safe. I guess you mean fail-safe defaults in bios. How risky is that? maybe trying optimized defaults first? Honestly, I am afraid comp wont boot anymore if fiddling with the bios defaults.

Re: Just out of a sudden, my CDROM isn't detected by BIOS anymore
both ide channels will run off the same controller
Failsafes are fine you can set it all up after if you need to although if you didnt change anything to begin with ? the worst it will do maybe is mess your boot priority but you can make not of that

Re: Just out of a sudden, my CDROM isn't detected by BIOS anymore
I was afraid of the mobo dying type of answer : ) but maybe that is the case, if no one has any other ideas as to what could be wrong.
Is it worth trying optimized default in bios?

Re: Just out of a sudden, my CDROM isn't detected by BIOS anymore
you could just buy a sata dvd rw or a ide to sata converter I bought a couple off ebay for less than a tenner
Failsafes are better they are just like clearing the cmos without losing you date settings
BTW when you say its not showing up in bios where have you looked? have you selelcted boot menu and tried to boot from it there? I have to ask cuz a lot of people who ask questions here do not really know what they are looking at I do not assume this is the case but I have to ask

Re: Just out of a sudden, my CDROM isn't detected by BIOS anymore
Many thanks, will see if something will change after a failsafe.
Guess I will get a SATA if not.
Many thanks man.

In standard CMOS features no value for cdrom is there, it says none
In integrated perpherals>ide function setup the ide channels are enabled. all but the UDMAs( maybe i should try setting them also to AUTO or that doesn't matter.)
In advanced bios setup, cdrom is set to first boot device.
Perhaps I have overlooked something?

I do not think you have overlooked anything. Resetting the bios is the first thing to do (failsafes) if in the unlikely event it does not boot after simply go into hard drive priorities and makes sure boot drive is selected. If you only have 1 I can not see there being a problem.
Have you tried a different cable off the psu just to rule that out?

Alright, many thanks!

I haven't done that, but the drive seems to have power though. It's opening and closing.
I dont know but could it be worth trying the following also?:
Setting the jumper on the drive to cable select? Instead of Master.

Have you got any other IDE drives that you can connect up?

Re: Just out of a sudden, my CDROM isn't detected by BIOS anymore
You mean connect up simultaneously? or simply test another drive?
When the problem started, after reseating cables and replacing with a brand new one, I also took out the drive, replacing it with a brand new one, unopened from the shelf. That is one I currently have plugged in.
