Hi,

Is the Nvidia GTS 250 better then a nvidia 9800GT or 9800GTX+ ?

It depends what you will be doing with the computer. High end gaming, then year, the 250 is better. But is it worth the price jump?

in the beginning there was the GeForce 8800 GT, and we were happy.
Then, we then got a faster version: the 8800 GTS 512MB. It was more expensive, but we were still happy.
And then it got complicated.
The original 8800 GT, well, it became the 9800 GT. Then they overclocked the 8800 GTS and it turned into the 9800 GTX. Now this made sense, but only if you ignored the whole this was an 8800 GT to begin with thing.
The trip gets a little more trippy when you look at what happened on the eve of the Radeon HD 4850 launch. NVIDIA introduced a slightly faster version of the 9800 GTX called the 9800 GTX+. Note that this was the smallest name change in the timeline up to this point, but it was the biggest design change; this mild overclock was enabled by a die shrink to 55nm.
All of that brings us to today where NVIDIA is taking the 9800 GTX+ and calling it a GeForce GTS 250.

the 9800gtx/9800gtx+ and the gts250 are the same card, just the gts250 uses less power and is smaller.

Same core, just a few tweaks on the power setup and a PCB design.

It is essentially a re-badged 9800GTX+, performance will be identical.

Difference between the GT and the GTX is a little over 100 mhz core clock from what I can see

seriously though you can get a 4870 for around 20 quid more than a GTX and only a tenner or so more than the 250 GTS I would certainly go that route instead

The 9800GT has 112 SP's, where as the GTX has 128.

The 4850 and GTX are pretty much identical when it comes to performance, with the 9800GTX inching ahead in a few tests, 4850 also wins a few

i would go for a ati 4870 unless you wanted to go sli later on if your board supports it no point really going for, a gtx xxx series card unless you want a 285/295 and even then the 285's iirc are only outperforming the ati cards in certain games and apps, also dependent on price and what you would be willing to spend look at the 4890's.

list there of the cheapest and also the one's that are in stock of the cards as well, as you can see by the prices of them the 48xx cards are very cheap compared to the nvidia cards the 4870/90's are ati's top of the line single gpu cards, and they are far cheaper than the nvidia options and perform around the same.
seriously though go for the ati card as i have 2x bfg gtx280's in sli and to be honest yes it's good at high res and high detail gaming, but when you think that i get probably only an extra 10-20fps over the 2x 4870's in crossfire on in crysis and only an extra 5-10fps on just the 1 card and that is the most graphically, demanding game that i know of then does it really seem worth it to you.

as most people on here know i like nvidia and always will but if your looking at spending a fortune, on graphics then go for nvidia but if you are sensible enough to not spend a fortune on a graphics card or cards, then ati is your best bet they give top of the range nvidia cards a serious run for there money and only just loose out and, considering they are almost half the price it makes more sense to buy ati at the moment than nvidia.

also just to add you shouldn't buy them from overclockers but i have them on a bookmark so faster to get to.

Wait two weeks - let the Gtx275 get going and all prices will have to re-adjust. Gtx250 is a waste of time imo. 192 shader Gtx260 are plummeting - 55nm 216 shader will follow shortly as will ATI 4870 and all of those are a better bet than a 250. Yes, you may end up paying Â£40/Â£50 more, but it is a better investment.

Keep your eye on nVidia Gtx260 - (55nm) 216 Shader - and ATI 4870 1Gb if you want a really good bargain, but just hang on for a couple of weeks (they are already cheap as hell to be honest)

ATI 4890 is a classic - it can run everything a close race upto x2 cards - and they are already down to Â£195 - there has to be a massive price decrease in the coming weeks. It's idiotic at the moment - there are Gtx250 costing MORE than Gtx260! It's all gone a bit mad.

What articles have you been reading like?

The 4890 is nothing more than a heavily overclocked 4870 with a few memory architectural tweaks.

Performance wise it sits in between the GTX 260 and narrowly loses to the GTX280. It still has nothing on X2 cards.

Because it can cope with everything upto a Gtx285 and does it for Â£195 - and as soon as nVidia get the Gtx275 out from all partners it will drop even more and it will drag everything with it.

I don't mean the architecture is a classic - I just mean the card as it is. And that is before the partners get the non-reference versions out. It is going to whipe best part of Â£100 off Gtx285 over the coming month.

I've read the technical brief, the core architecture is identical.

If you clocked them both the same, the 4890 pulls ahead because of the better memory management only. Clock for clock they are identical. Other changes include lower power requirements. It's merely an improved 4870 which is heavily overclocked... the advantage being it also has a lot of headroom for more overlocking. A good sample will reach 1Ghz core freqency easy.
