Splashtop\express gate

Upgraded (sideways stepped) my mobo the other day and it came with the Asus express gate facility by splashtop http://www.splashtop.com/index.php

Anybody else have a system with this kind of fast boot to internet\IM\skype?

From power on to browser in around 11 seconds for me, download files to USB HDD\flash drives, full colour, sound, wired and wireless connectivity reasonably customisable'ish, pretty neat really.

The only problem for me as its a pre-boot mini-OS my fans are spinning like crazy (GPU especially)

Re: Splashtop\express gate

yeah posted about this ages ago had a couple of machines with it. The fact you need an os on the machine so you can install the express gate utility seems to spoil it somewhat for me as you can not test a system with it untill you do an install. Eventually I guess they will give it you on some kinda flash memory until then its just a gimmick

My second computer has this feature, but I've never bothered finding out what it does.

Bah,that wee Linux aint compatible with.......Linux.
I suppose if i had to wait on my OS taking minuteS to boot i might consider something like this but the reality is i can already boot to a full blown desktop environment in seconds. Not quite the few seconds in question of course but certainly not "minutes" either.

Plus, boot times aint the big deal their made out to be if you ask me.
I choose an OS(Ubuntu using EXT4 filesystem) that takes about 50 seconds to get to the desktop but i could choose/build an OS that took much less time if the boot times were such a big deal.

Many Windows users could probably shave a good few seconds off their boot times just by giving msconfig a wee visit now & again

Cancel that...it`s actually 35 seconds, from the bootloader anyway.
