Windows 'Side Bar' download monitor
Hi everyone,
I'd REALLY like a Windows Vista Sidebar download monitor, one that sums up your days download. There are a few out there that monitor the current download speed, but I can't find one that states just how much you've downloaded since you turned your PC on.
There's a few stand alone apps that do this but I'd just LOVE one that sits in the sidebar that does similar.
Anyone know of one?
Cheers
Phil

AFAIK There isn't one, they can onl track the days and how much you have downloaded in a da, you can work it out by looking at the times on app but I doubt there is one for the job ou want it to do.

Re: Windows 'Side Bar' download monitor
From your post it sounds like you want a generic tool to monitor all downloads which would be very difficult and be specific to "you" so one prob wouldn't exist.
It may be possible for certain apps e.g. IE7, IE8 but you would need to learn how to script or find one custom made.

Re: Windows 'Side Bar' download monitor
I spent a few hours searching but to no avail.
The reason I ask is that I know it's possible and I'm a .net developer amongst other things and didn't want to develop something that already exists.
As I've been made redundant, I should have something ready in a few weeks.
Unless someone can find something as even though it's possible ... it'll be a pain in the a$$.
Cheers

Sorry to hear about the redundancy, I hope everything is well with you.
I would question "ready in a few weeks"?? The sidebar items are simply web-apps, I assume that you are at least a fairly accomplished coder therefore weeks implies a level of significant sophistication, I am intrigued?

Re: Windows 'Side Bar' download monitor
Yeah .. I'm at over 100'000 downloads with my current freeware applications.
I do it as it's fun and better than watching telly.

I think you have overshot the junkie status
may I suggest using virtual machines such as vmware for you and your test ground. It seems highly likely that given the number of downloads and installs required you are VERY likely to do some lasting damage to your system.
How many apps are you downloading with?

Re: Windows 'Side Bar' download monitor
Nah, 100'000 plus people have downloaded software I've written.
This sidebar app is going to be HUGE, I just wondered if one existed before I got stuck in.
I've cracked 100'000 and now I'm going for a million.

NOW it becomes clear! I haven't looked into it but why not use a download site e.g. in the linux community they tend to make software available via sourceforge. I suspect this only applies to GNU licensed software but CNET, etc. also offer similar services. These sites could possibly also raise your profile.

Re: Windows 'Side Bar' download monitor
I'm not to sure what you are all talking about and have probably misunderstood what you need but would this be too simple a work around to use until you find exactly what you want. It lets me see a running total of my up/down loads for the day plus it can do a lot more things that are way beyond my limited needs? it's also free.

Re: Windows 'Side Bar' download monitor
Cool ... I've installed it.
It's obviously an old XP version that just so happens to work on Vista. What I'm going to do it create the 'stats' bit and put it in a Windows Vista Sidebar app.
Cheers
Phil
