Free Cable?

Hi chaps and chappeses.

This is my first post on this forum and hi, would just like to say wasnt it great to see man get stuffed by the mighty reds on saturday!

Anyway I need to know the answer to a question that I have and I hope that someone on this forum will be able to help me.

When you want to get cable free via a chipped box do you need to have a cable subscription or can you just connect the box to the existing wires on the exteriour of the house and recieve it like that? I do not want to view free cable as i do not agree with pirating in any way but if you could help me by answering this question it would be a help.
