Changing the default picture viewer in XP (SP3) user accounts

Hi guys.

I recently downloaded a free version of Corel Snapfire to see what it is like. Not overly impressed, I decided not to bother using it but found that it had installed itself as my default picture viewer. A few days ago I found out how to change the default viewer back to windows picture & fax viewer via control panel/folder options in our admin account. No problem I thought.... Anyway I've just been trying to alter the background picture displayed on our youngest's user account and found that Corel is still showing as its default software I tried to change it in the same way via his account's control panel but when I select JPEG and JPG in the file types tab, the 'opens with/change' option remains hidden and won't work. I'm presuming this is to do with the fact that I'm trying to do something the user account hasn't got permission to do but I can find no way of change the account's default viewer settings via the control panel in our admin account. Can anyone assist please?

Cheers!

Re: Changing the default picture viewer in XP (SP3) user accounts

Item 80 on this page (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm) gives two registry hacks, one to disable the Picture and Fax Viewer the other to enable it.

Back up your registry before doing ANYTHING with any of these files, they have the potential to seriously screw up your system!!!!!

Try saving the Enable one to your desktop (make sure it saves as "pictureandfaxrestore.reg") and then run it. That should (hopefully) restore all the settings for the viewer).

Looking at what it does it should restore this for all users by default. Failing that you might want to temporarily make the other account an Admin account, make the changes, then revert it back to a normal user.

Also, this little application might help (not tried it myself, so the usual caveats apply):

Re: Changing the default picture viewer in XP (SP3) user accounts

TVM for that Rob - however I seem to have done it (touch wood... ) I right clicked on the picture file in his user account and selected the 'open with' and 'choose programme' options then checked the 'always use the selected programme to open files of this type' box. It seems to have done the trick..

Thanks anyway
