Upgrade Time!!!

Hey,

I have a quite old setup atm (939 asus a8n-sli premium, 3200xp amd processor and 1gb ram) and I am looking to upgrade. I have a max of £140 budget for this, been looking at some bundles on novatech and quite like the look of this one http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...html?MBB-A522M but am not sure about the mobo, can't really find much info on it.

If anyone can suggest some alternatives, and I say again that £140 is my absolute limit.

Cheers.

Re: Upgrade Time!!!

It's nothing really fancy and is only just the next step from the one you have...

Perhaps ebay might have some AM2+ bundles ...

Also these boards tend to want a 24pin PSU and not the older 20pin, what's your current board???

Re: Upgrade Time!!!

You can get some decenet duel core bundles about now with 2 Gig DDR2 Memory for roughly 100 squid. Then use the extra 40 for a Pcie Graphics card.

Re: Upgrade Time!!!

I already have a PCI-E graphics card, 7600GT, fine for what I need. Mobo, I said what it was in my first post, A8N-SLI Premium.

If he upgrades his mother board, either way a new one will come with a 20+4 pin adapter, if not they're easy to get hold of.

Re: Upgrade Time!!!

As it turns out, did not get any upgrades at all, had to use my budget for something else. However, I now have a new budget of £200, been looking at a bundle on Overclockers http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...39&subcat=1334

If anyone can suggest some better bundles (or even separate parts I can put together myself) it would be appreciated.

Re: Upgrade Time!!!

From what I see, you have a 7600Gt, and are happy, so games aren't your priority. So what is? What OS are you using?

If it is 32Bit then you are capped at 2Gb (3Gb if you are happy with it running a bit slower)

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=8&subcat=813

I would go for the cheapest board that serves the purpose and spend the rest on a CPU.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=5&subcat=807

These are just suggestion btw. That leaves £142 (-P&P if you are inc in your £200) for a CPU

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=6&subcat=1328

Those are getting great reviews, the board is AM2+ but it may need a BIOS flash, and you will have to check to see if can run them.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=6&subcat=1033

Again, BIOS flash maybe and compatibility, just check beforehand.

If you grab the X4 Phenom, you are £20 clear on your budget, so that is something you could spend on a better Motherboard.

Don't forget, if you get an AM2 board you are stuck with AM2, AM2+ will support Phenom2 CPU, so that future proofs you a bit, so maybe, a cheap AM2 CPU in a more expensive AM2+ board might be a better choice. It depends on what you want it for.

Or......

Stick with that OCZ RAM

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=5&subcat=1344

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=6&subcat=793

If you wanted to go Intel, that should fit in with a £200 budget (my math might be off) and you could go to the next CPU up with small penny increase in your budget.

Or.....Again stick with the same RAM

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=5&subcat=326

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=6&subcat=793

Sorry I can't manipulate it to get an Intel Quad. Maybe someone else can.

Re: Upgrade Time!!!

Do you need more than 2 cores? what are the main uses of your machine? what does it not do now that you want it to?

AM2 + boards will also support AM3 cpus

bare in mind you will need an OS

Re: Upgrade Time!!!

I will be primarily using Windows 7 X64 Beta until August, when it expires.

After that I will switch to Vista X64 until Windows 7 is released officialy. I am currently running Windows 7 X64 now with no problems at all. I like to dabble with Video Encoding, not too sure if there are any apps that can take advantage of dual core processing, but there may be in the future I guess.

I posted this topic elsewhere, the following parts were suggested for my price range:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/148715
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/146049
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/149274

I will be ordering Tuesday so have to have made my mind up by then.
