Sorry, I should have said source material, as Quantum of Solace is a short story, not a full-length novel. In fact, on further investigation it seems they have borrowed nothing beyond the title, although this in itself is not unusual. Several of the films have been a mish-mash of ideas from Fleming's various writings.

I think the direction they are taking Bond is superb, both modern and classic at the same time.

ITV have been re-running some of the older films on Sunday afternoons recently and the contrast between them is very stark. In fact if you compare Moonraker (shown last week) and On Her Majesty's Secret Service (week before) you might be wondering what the hell they were playing at with Moonraker, and the tragedy of George Lazenby only doing the one film. OHMSS compares very well with Casino Royale in its portrayal of Bond as a full, rounded character who is capable of getting hurt as well as delivering wisecracks and innendo.

If I remember correctly this is the first Bond film to be based on a book in three decades.

I like this younger, harder Bond, its actually much nearer to the original films, and indeed from what I can remember, the charector in the books.

Don't forget, and I know this sounds cynical, that they need to engage a whole new generation of fans, fans who have been brought up on a diet of tougher thrillers and action films.
