DNS

I've got the 10meg Virgin broadband connected up to my D-Link655 router.
I'm getting 2 Linksys WVC54GCA internet cameras and need to know the best FREE way to be able to view these on the internet. I get a 3 month trial with Linksys but then it's subscription.
How can I do this?

Just thought........I guess I'd need a static ip address, can i configure this through my laptop/router etc or do I need Virgin to do this?

Re: DNS

Surely the internet camera just uses a web IP/port?? If so then just assign a local IP, and set up a forward to that IP/port on your router.. For a static IP use DYNDNS or NOIP..otherwise if you want a true fixed IP then you;ll need a VM business account..

Re: DNS

Virgin don't offer static IPs on the residential service.

The do offer static IPs on the business services, but they easiest option is to register with a dynamic DNS service such as that offered by http://www.dyndns.com/. These require either special setting up on the router, or a client run on the PC, but they allow you to assign a DNS name to a dynamic IP.

Re: DNS

They're not static IPs as such, but if you don't turn off your cable modem they'll very rarely change. I've had the same IP for probably the last year or so.
It'll change if Virgin do certain maintenance works in your area but otherwise it's almost as good as a fixed IP.

Oops, woke up this morning to discover I've gone from an 81. to an 82. address.

S*ds law at work I suppose. No sooner do I mention my never-changing IP..
