The program that ntl are folowing on LLU will make their services, Voice, broadband, VoD and DTV available to another 1.9m homes currently off ntl-net and off Telewest-net.

Re: ntl's plans for the future?
Very interesting article.
Wonder what some will make of the statement:
Upstream
†¢ The standard upstream spectrum is 5MHz to 65MHz using QPSK modulation in 3.2MHz channels
†¢ Upstream capacity is 5.12 Mb/s per 2000 homes
†¢ QAM 16 could increase this to 10.24 Mb/s to each home
Downstream
†¢ The standard downstream spectrum is 85MHz to 750MHz using QAM 64 modulation in 8MHz channels
†¢ 80 downstream channels are available
†¢ Each downstream channel can support 38Mb/s of downstream data (Broadband and TV)
†¢ Maximum downstream capacity is 80 x 38Mb/s = 3.04Gb/s delivered to each home
†¢ QAM 256 modulation could increase this to 4Gb/s to each home

It is for EuroDOCSIS areas, DOCSIS has different (i.e. lower limits). Most of both networks is now 3.2Mhz, which is what's made the big difference in the last year on upstream congestion.
There's a similar difference in the standard downstream, which is 6Mhz in DOCSIS areas rather than 8Mhz.

How does LLU provide DTV to offnet customers?
The current downstream/upstream BB capability shows just how quickly available bandwidth can be used up by a few users maxing out their connection.
How does a 4Gb/s down, 10.24 Mb/s up connection grab you?

as NTL are doubling the speeds twice a year, we'll be on 4GB down soon!

If it was a free upgrade for new customers and existing customers had to pay a one-off £25 administration fee I could see trouble brewing again.

Erm - If you're a new customer, it's not possible to be 'upgraded' ......

Digitial Subscriber Line Access Modem

'Multiplexer', actually, as it converts a bunch of DSL lines into a single output. You can put any kind of digital data down a DSL line as long as you have the right kit at the other end to decode it, this can be voice, compressed digital video or Internet traffic.
