Can anyone help me find out if I'm 10mb or not?
I haven't got a clue if I've been upgraded or not and http://192.168.100.1/ will not give me the answer because I have the Motorola SURFboard 5100.
Can anyone find me a way to find this out?
Thanks.

Just do a speed test on something like SPEEDTEST.NET or a few other sites and tell us what you're upload speed is...

On speednet.net, my upload speed is 460 to 480 at times, but my download speed isn't anywhere close to 1mb at times. I've rang Virgin, they said it's nothing to do with my modem or anything.

460-480 is above the 4Mb upload speed and about right for the 10Mb upload speed...
Try speed tests at various times of the day, also try downloading from the VM demo games servers a few files simultaneously...

Reboot your modem by unplugging the power lead on the back at the bottom for 10 seconds, let the light settle and run the speed test below.
------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are a Virgin Media customer then the best speedtest is from the link below.
Have you tried going to this link to check your speeds http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/
click on blueyondergames>demos>then click on at least 2 large files around 400/500 mb and save them to your desktop, and then wait a couple of minutes then write down the transfer rates on the files that are running > times them by 8 and you will get a truer download speed.
Remember to stop and delete the files.
i.e : 250kbps X 8 = 2MB, 500kbps X 8 = 4MB, 1250kbps X 8 = 10MB, 2500kbps X 8 = 20MB
-----------------------------------------------------------
If you are still not happy PM me your account number and I will check on Monday in work for you.

I'm still getting poor speeds. Been like this for 2 weeks now. I haven't got a clue why it's still like this.

Post what modem you have and your power levels from your config pages of your modem. The should be a sticker on the bottom saying what model.
Open a browser and in the address bar put> 192.168.100.1 password and username are both root if required.
What I want you to post is the Downstream and the Upstream from the signal page of your Motorola modem, plus what model the modem is for me thanks.
DO NOT POST YOUR MAC ADDRESS OR SERIAL NUMBER
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please also do the speed test I posted above, thank you as all this information will help with any potential diagnosis of any problems with your connection.
You could ring in but they will only ask you to do the above.

Those levels seem fine to me. I'm thinking your UBR is oversubscribed.

Re: Can anyone help me find out if I'm 10mb or not?
you could try the speed test at tenmeg.myby.co.uk
Looks like you are on ten just based on the upload.
Interesting figures - oversubsciption would normally affect the upload too, UBR issues would normally also affect the upstream as well (poor SNR on u/s), so it looks like a local issue as are 90% of slow speed calls.

Hi,
Why would downstream oversubscription affect upstream, the two are, as far as I'm aware, completely discrete channels, the only commonality being TCP connections which use both. As downstream oversubscription doesn't have as dramatic an effect on latency as upstream oversubscription even a quite badly oversubscribed downstream is still more than able to support the upstream rates VM provide.
Those were my understanding anyway. Ditto uBR issues, it's quite possible to have issues with the downstream port on the CMTS card, the upconverter if it's a non-integrated card, or the FPM, none of which affect upstream.
If you know better please do let me know.

Re: Can anyone help me find out if I'm 10mb or not?
What I meant was that when there is oversubscription then both the upstream and downstream will tend be over subscribed ie the upstream traffic tends to increase with downstream traffic - I wasn't trying to suggest any causality. As to the UBR I was referring to personal anecdotal evidence that slow speeds are often caused by upstream issues at the UBR most often due to poor SNR. Personally I have not seen any of the issues you mention, though as I said this is merely anecdotal and I am not trying to say there are not other possibilities merely expressing an opinnion. I will make a mental note to try to post more clearly in the future.

Re: Can anyone help me find out if I'm 10mb or not?
Understood - however I'm not aware of any oversubscription issues on upstream for several months on the VM network, not sure there have really been any. Takes 2 customers to max a downstream, takes 8 to show some impact on a single upstream and there's on average 4 of them to play with per node.
Upstream congestion is a non-issue at the moment as far as I'm aware, again though if you've seen recent cases of it I'll take that as read.
