computer hangs at desktop
i have just restored my sony desktop pc with the restore disc,i have reinstalled all my programs ok. but i am unable to install b band using the dinstall disc, b band is working ok, but everytime i switch on the pc it loads to the desktop then hangs for 5min+, checking event viewer i get a dhcp event 1003 error. and a 1003b event 4 error, is this connected ? i would add that i have restored my pc before with no trouble. i only restored because my grandson was banging the keyboard when the pc was coming on

Re: computer hangs at desktop
This is not a Broadband issue..
Its a PC issue.
Sounds to me like you should try restoring it again
make sure if u are plugging the internet in after the restore.. to do it by the ethernet (phone looking type) cable... (if you are not sure what an ethernet cable looks like google it)
if that was me.. id restore again.

Re: computer hangs at desktop
Moved to 'General IT' as this doesn't seem to be a VM issue.

Check the settings on your network card. Make sure it's set to get IP and DNS addresses automatically.
If you do a start/run/cmd 'ipconfig /all' what are the first couple of number groups from your IP address and default gateway? Also what is shown as DNS server addresses.

That looks good to me. It's picking up a valid IP and the correct DNS addresses.
The delay is still a puzzle. Perhaps Zingle is right and the NIC is failing.
It might be worth removing the NIC in Device Manager and letting it reinstall itself on a reboot. Also check for more recent drivers.

Try uninstalling the VM broadband software [something gear, or gear something? I forget]. You don't need it if you're on proper VM broadband [instead of their "off-net" service that uses BT's network]. The only thing that CD is good for [for people with proper VM BB] is as something to put your coffee mug on!
If you want suggestions for firewall/AV software to use instead of the ones that VM provide, I'd recommend Comodo firewall [free], & Kaspersky Antivirus [not free, but worth it].

Re: computer hangs at desktop
what operating system is the pc running, and what is the ethernet cable plugged into - ie a router, a Set top box a modem etc etc.
The DHCPNACK error should tell you the IP of the dhcp server, what is it?
dhcpnack is saying that the dhcp server has not acknowledged or assigned you a valid ip...

Re: computer hangs at desktop
Have you rebooted the STB? and if this makes no difference, power it off for a couple of hours then try again.
post back results...
