Is this going to work ?

Ive signed up with Vonage, they are sending me a box that will connect to the VM modem or my router. However I dont want the router on all the time, so was wondering if a splitter will work.

Then the Vonage and the router will be connected to the Cable modem.

Then I can switch off the router when not in use

Nope, the Modem will only give out 1 IP so the router will need to remain on

So I can't "share" that IP with 2 devices?

So if it wont work that way, I have to get a switch, that will switch the Vonage box, from the router to the modem, and re-boot them modem?

There is a way (So Im told) but have to wait until the box arrives to try it out

Leave the router on simple as, solves problem and everyone is happy.

I never turn mine off, tends to cause problems turning it on and off all the time

Some of these ATA Boxes have a pass through with NAT, but bear in mind you might have problems with port forwarding, if I were you I would just leave the router on where it is.

Ok I have found a lot more info now, and know what they are sending me. It seams there is 2 devices available, the one they are sending is a D-Link VA

The D-link is for connection to a router only, while a V-Portal is basically the same as the D-link but also has a 1 port router built in.

They did ask if I had a router, had I said no, I would have been sent the V-Portal, which might have been better. I can buy them from Vonage for Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â£9.99

I always switch everything off at night, including the modem, its done automatically when I switch off the PC (Inteli Plugs) so was thinking it might be better to leave the modem on, and have a phone line on...

However thinking about it, if I go to bed then my answering machine is on anyway, and I will never answer the phone zzzzzzzzzz...

So now if I still switch off everything, the Vonage system has a feature to take a message if it cannot ring me, and the message is emailed to me as well as it being available to listen to online, so no real problem.

Even the mobile phone diverts to voicemail when its off
