Virgin Broadband / Wireless

Good afternoon

Help! I just joined Virgin Broadband and they supplied me with a normal one port router. I have now have a laptop that I would like to use on wifi but there is only one port of that small cable router.

I do have a new Netgear 814 router wireless; I tried to connect it to the small Virgin router with the Ethernet cable but did not go far!!

How can I and what is required to connect my Netgear router to the small one port Virgin box, to allow me to have more ethernet ports and wifi in the house? is that possible?

The virgin cable end is a round shape, clever way of doing it, so, i cannot plug it in the back of my Netgear...is it to force me to buy their router?

Thank you for your help! Gilles

Re: Virgin Broadband / Wireless

Exactly which 814 do you have (full model number please) as some 814's are for ADSL only and won't work for cable routing...

But if it is the correct router you should have a seperate WAN port (Ethernet) that the cable modem (it's not a router) plugs into...

Re: Virgin Broadband / Wireless

Also the ROUND plug you specify is the cable that comes into your house, this needs to be left plugged in the modem as the MAC address of your modem is registered and no other modem will work. It's only the ethernet from this modem that you can attach a router to

Re: Virgin Broadband / Wireless

Hi Gilles you have a standard Cable Modem probably an Ambit 256 with Virginmedia on the front of it, to go wireless you require a Wireless Router link below for a Netgear one.

This is a Netgear WGR614 and is £24.99 if ordered online for instore pickup.

Re: Virgin Broadband / Wireless

Thank you all for your assistance. I just checked my router and it is actually a netgear modem/router DG834N.

What I cannot get to understand it, is it possible to have it work then with my little Virgin media cable box, since i will not have an adsl cable arriving to my Netgear but only an ethernet cable to one of the slots, so how will it pass the signal to the other ports on the router and activate the wifi??! sorry about my ignorance!

thank you all for helping! regards, Gilles

That's an ADSL modem router & as such will not work with a cable connection.

A Linksys WRT54G should fit your needs, or if you want a pre-N model then have a look here...
