can anyone help with adsl connection
hi,
i'm trying to help a friend sort out his internet connection both his computers are connected via talktalk, all the software is loaded but both computers lost there connection the other day for no reason the phone line still works ok for phone calls but when trying to connect it just says (on both computers) that it cannot connect to talktalk i'm totally
his set up:
two computers, both in seperate rooms
both using seperate modems
modem 1 is on the main bt box, with filter with phone plugged in
modem 2 is on extention line with filter but no phone
i'm not up on adsl as i've only had cable bb for the last 7/8 years
does this point to a phone line fault? it's the only thing i can think of now (just confused as the phone still works!!!)
Tia

Re: can anyone help with adsl connection
Has he tried swapping the modems over to see if one modem is dead ?
Try unhooking all devices apart from just one modem and computer.
Also, see if there is a problem with the filer. Take it out. See if it solves anything.

right tried swapping modems over still nothing also i tried just leaving one computer connected nothing else (still seems dead)
I've tried 11 different filters now so i think i can rule that out
now i think i have done everything i can without going up a bt pole any other suggestions or is it time to phone talktalk (and i thought vm Indian call center's where bad until i phoned this lot they make vm look and sound intelligent )

Re: can anyone help with adsl connection
If both computers were working fine and the Internet just died it would seem to indicate a fault their end or somewhere down the line.
No software or major hardware changes taken place I take it ? No addition of firewalls, antivirus software been added ?
Try seeing if it will trace route.....Go to run, then type "cmd" and then type "tracert www.bbc.co.uk"

Re: can anyone help with adsl connection
If it won't work on the main socket with just the filter, modem and tel connected then the only other thing to try is the test socket if there is one. If this fails then its either hardware failure or a fault on the system.
Can you set the modem to use the speaker so you can hear dial tone when it starts to dial out?

Re: can anyone help with adsl connection
right tried a tracert but couldn't get anything, so in the end we went round one of my mates houses with his laptop and modem both worked fine so ended up phoning bt and they did some tests on the line and said that there are some abnormal readings or something so they are sending an engineer out to him tomorrow

hi,
yes it has now been sorted, the bt guy that did the job said that he had to run some new cable for the line as some strands had brokern unfortunatley my friend was at work and so was i, so i'm only told what his wife told me, but it seems strange to me that a property that has only been there for 3 years is already having problems with bt cable's (thought they should last longer than that). told him to go with virgin
But thank you everyone for your help (don't know what i would do without you sometimes)

Re: can anyone help with adsl connection
Two modems - is that a valid configuration?
How the heck do they split the upstream & downstream?

Not on a single line it's not
At least not both connected/powered up at the same time
