Unhappy Connection Dropout?

My internet connection keeps dropping out. It has always been fine until the past month.
I will be happily surfing the net when all of a sudden I will click on a link and nothing will happen except the lights on my modem stop flashing and become static.
Strange thing is, if I try and go to my homepage (BBC) it will with no problem, but I am unable to get to anywhere else on the net for hours on end. Then it will all of a sudden spring into life again.
Any ideas??

Re: Connection Dropout?

I've been having this for at least a fortnight... VM says they see nothing wrong (phone call) and ignore me on the usenet support site.

One guy on the phone asked me to go to http://192.168.100.1/ (user root, pass root) and tell him what the readings were... when the modem was dead!!

Re: Connection Dropout?

Have you tried switching off all equipment (PC/Router/Modem) and rebooting them in the Order of MODEM then ROUTER then PC (letting each settle after boot)?

My modem once ground to a halt and VM got me to reboot it and all was OK.

Once modem up and running then goto its IP and check stats.

Re: Connection Dropout?

I don't have a router but have tried rebooting the PC & modem which seems to cure the problem for 5 mins or so, then I am back to square one. Ironically it seems to be okay at the moment. Just waiting for it to go again.

Re: Connection Dropout?

I have also been having exactly the same problem and for approx the same period of time. Found this forum while looking for answers. I've had nynex/ntl/virgin broadband since release and have never come across this phenomena before.

Anybody any ideas?

Re: Connection Dropout?

Same with me too, nothing but my homepage will load. I have some additional problems however.

1) My router setup page takes AGES to load while this problem occurs. If my connection is fine, then the setup page appears instantly. Now according to my knowledge, the router is on internal network, so slow speeds should NOT affect it. I remember having NO net connection at all, but I could still login into my router.

2) This problem seems to happen while I'm d/l'ing torrents. It happen twice today while my torrent client was on. After exiting the torrent client and waiting 30 secs everything was back to normal.

3) Strangely enough, rebooting my router seems to cure the problem... for a total of 10 mins when it starts happening again. This is the same router and modem I've used with VM for almost 2 years and it's the first time it's happened.

What going on?
