Re: British Energy about to be sold overseas?
Well I have no problem with UK based companies being part or entirely foreign owned but that should be on the basis that we have equal free access to foreign markets. So, if the Chinese or Indians want to buy up chunks of our industry we should be able to do likewise. Sadly my impression is that even in Europe some countries (e.g. Germany, Spain, France,) either refuse to allow foreign ownership or make it extremely difficult for that to happen in practice.
I do think there are strategic industries which should remain in UK control however and these would include the utilities.

I agree. Given all the fuss about National Security, it does seem somewhat irrational that we sell off the very things that could bring a country down.
Not only that we have people outside our country determining the prices we will be charged in the UK.
It's time we became self-sufficient and independent once again instead of being dependent on other countries and vulnerable to attack whether physical or economic.

Re: British Energy about to be sold overseas?
On the bright side, it may spur the development of next generation nuclear power plants...
Quote:
EDF, one of the biggest nuclear power groups in the world and the only bidder to have tabled an offer by the 9 May deadline, is seen as the frontrunner. British Energy is attractive to companies keen on increasing their exposure to nuclear generation in the UK because it owns the sites where all of the country's active nuclear reactors are now located, sites seen as the most desirable for newly built reactors.
The Government has expressed its desire for a new generation of nuclear reactors to be built, the first European government in years to do so. The UK is thus seen by the nuclear industry as a proving ground that will help position them for expected nuclear revivals in other countries.

Re: British Energy about to be sold overseas?
hiya
so would this mean even higher fuel bills and where would it all go...yes to foreign country..who then have us by the balls...what would they do hold us all to ransom for not being able to pay bills.
it is control of the UK which is really not UK anymore is it...there should be a vote with this as it is the peoples in the UK not for other higher powers to decide...I forgot we dont have a say do we...never have...
