Mike, did you intend to red rep me for that!?

Was going to ask what/where the service menu was..........and what can it do ?

Re: Ipod clicking !
On the 4G iPods, hold down Menu and Select to reset the ipod until the Apple logo shows, then immediately hold down both the Select and Play buttons until the "Disk Mode" screen appears.
I think this is the service menu he mentions.

Re: Ipod clicking !
Yup, and on the mini's hold down menu and select until it resets and when the apple logo appears hold down select and previous, the apple logo should then reverse and then let go and the service menu should appear. If you have an ipod that starts up and shows a disk error or grumpy ipod icon then you can also try putting it into Disk Mode, reset your ipod, then hold down Next and Previous when the apple logo appears. This can cure ipods that won't mount on your computer and allow you to update them and restore them via USB. Oh and what cant the service menu do? It can run a series of self-tests such as ram test, cache test, output test, hard disk scan (bad sectors) and LCD test. Glad I could help!

Re: Ipod clicking !
There is a strange alternative which might fix the problem. I read a post where a guy said he took the back cover off his ipod and put a folded business card on the hard drive and closed it with the business card wedged between the back cover and the hard drive, I tried it as well and with two folded business cards it did the job, the ipod works perfectly again. The clicking noise you hear is because when the hard drive spins up to a speed it starts moving causing the clicking noise, giving it that little support completely solves the problem. It took a while getting the cover off but with a flat screwdriver working from one of the corners to the side of the ipod will get it off.
