MS update issue?

Up until a few weeks ago I would periodically get a yellow 'update' shield in the task bar advising me that updates for my PC were available, so I'd click on it, select the updates I wanted and download them. For the last few weeks this hasn't been happening however and the last 2-3 times updates have been ready these have been only notified to me on shutdown of the computer. Today I noticed the yellow shield appear in the task bar when I first booted up my machine only for it to disappear a few seconds later. I presumed that when once again when I shutdown the PC an update would be notified but nothing happened.

Should this be happening? If not what do i need to do?

Keep it simple for me though folks

Cheers!

Re: MS update issue?

It could be intermittent communicating with the update server -

I would go to >>

Start >> Control Panel >> Automatic Updates and turn them off

And run it once a week by going start > programs >> Windows Update

Re: MS update issue?

It could be that the Windows Update datastore has been damaged (it happens, from time to time).

To get around this do the following:
  1. Right click on "My Computer"
  2. Click Manage
  3. Double click "Service and Applications", then "Services"
  4. Find the service called either "Windows Update" or "Automatic Update". Click "Stop" to stop it.
  5. In "My Computer", go to your Windows Root folder (usually C:\Windows)
  6. Rename the folder "SoftwareDistribution"
  7. Go back to the Computer Management window, and restart the service.

Re: MS update issue?

Thanks for the replies guys - prompt as ever

Had a look at the settings and the auto update was set for 3.00am which is odd because we never leave the PC on overnight and it has been updating automatically prior to now

Maybe something happened via an earlier recent update so I've altered the auto update time to 10am every day and will see what happens.

I checked for updates manually and found 2 which I installed a few minutes ago and will report back if I have any further issues.

The 3 am figure is a windows default. If windows misses a scheduled update, it just checks next time it is able.

Ahhh - thanks for that - now I'm not sure if I need to worry or not
