Generally speaking, you only get what you pay for...
And if you're not already paying BT for a phone line then the costs are comparable.

Free market economics - if you are not satisfied with the price/speed package, there is always Sky, Be, etc.
Vote with your wallet if you are unhappy.

This is the problem isn't it, people say VM over charge for their BB stating the stand alone prices ie: £18-£25-£37 in comparison to other ISPs. But as TraxData says add in their line rental and there's not a lot in it, also give me cable BB over adsl any day, I may be paying more than I did a year ago when I was with Tiscali but I now get a reliable service with the speed I was promised, I got neither with Tiscali.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
But will the service degrade the more they bump up the speed and add more customers to an already overloaded network? What's the point of advertising cable BB based on 'fibre optic' if the contention/oversubscription is so bad in some areas you can't get the speed you're paying for and hence VM hide behind the 'up to' clause? Some good 'fibre opric' does you then!!

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
Hi guys,
I have been watching and reading this thread with great interest,as some of you, i am from Nuneaton in the Coventry area.
Now after many days and night waiting in vain for the fabled 10mb conection upgrade, i decided to phone VM and queery it,it turned out that my modem wasnt compatible with the upgrade and was told that i needed a new one which was delivered today, even if i did have to wait in all day just for some fella to hand it to me, as posting it wasnt an option,Apparently, i wasnt technically minded enough to un-plug and re-plug the three cable's back in,**** i feel i ought to retrain for my day job as an Aerospace engineer.
How ever, i feel that my old one was up to the job and has never let me down, which was also confirmed by VM's website, non the less i have a new modem free of charge which would give me the 10mb that i desperately want now (my kids are killing my conection speed)
Anyway after installing it and 4 different speed test site checks it seems im still on 4mb,so i decide to phone India to have a chat with one of VM's call center's,which in all fairness was pants, they couldnt help me,i was then asked to phone a premium rate number (ok 25pence per min) to have a chat with another one of India's finest minds, who after a lot of fafing about told me that i was correct, i didnt have 10mb only 4mb,please could i phone billing and get them to do the upgrade there (what??)
Ok, back to India i go,and this is the important bit it seems that everyone in the Coventry Area WILL be upgraded by 2nd April, so with baited breath i await for the inevitable non-upgrade and the many phone calls to India yet again, Fingers crossed :-)
Hmmm i wonder if i can get a take away at the same time.....
steve.

I'm sure we all know that apart from cutting up tankers, the new IPL and that TATA just brought Land Rover\Jaguar India has given us an excellent service on behalf of VM. Long live out-sourcing

You might like to try the newsgroup at news.virginmedia.com then
support.virginmedia.broadband.cable You need first to set up newsgroups in your Outlook Express. How to do so is on the Virginmedia website, in Customer Zone.
you will find its a much better method of getting answers than phoning India.
According to someone else's query on there, at least one UBR in Coventry is still awaiting update. They hadn't been notified when it would be done, nor indeed why it had been missed.
Just noticed the bit that said you are in Nuneaton. Check via the Connection bit at the top of the page.Just after the CPC2 bit theres an abreviation of your connection. It it say's Cov something the update should be done. If it say's Nunt1 , then according to a post on another forum, you are probably in the Birmingham area, which has yet to complete.

I did leaving on the 26th april for "be" as £18 for 2mb is a joke, I dont have to take Bt line rental into account we always did have the BT phone.
Be 8mb £14 1.3mb upload. even if I got half its still miles better, My line can handle 16mb so the £24 for 24MB was an option but a house up the street only gets about 18MB on it anyway.
As I've said I've went from £34 a month to Virgin to Nothing...
