Question What is acceptable ?

Hi all. I've had VM 20Mb cable for a few days now and would like to know the consensus of opinion as to what is acceptable/ expected for D/L speeds. Here are my speeds based on just the few days I have had the service - 11pm ish onwards almost full 20Mb speeds. During the week 3pm 'till about 9pm around 6Mb.Between 9pm and 11pm around 9 -11 Mb/s. Today (saturday) all day around 1.2 Mb, tested many times throughout the day using website speed tests and file downloads from a few sites including VM's gamefiles.virginmedia site. It is todays speed that concerns me. I have a 2nd PC set up and that is still connected to my old ADSL 8Mb service, and doing simultaneous tests the VM 20Mb service was 2 to 3 times slower than the ADSL. Thanks....

Re: What is acceptable ?

How about some ping results

start > run > cmd > ping www.bbc.co.uk

what about a tracert start > run > cmd tracert www.bbc.co.uk

Paste the results and we can go from there!

Also go to http://192.168.1.100 and then logs, post the logs as well.! I am sure we can help!

I have Vista home premium. I connect through a router (netgear WGT624) with no other pc's or devices on the network and have done several tests with the modem connected directly to the pc with no difference. I use Kaspersky Internet security and tried things with firewall and A/V disabled.
Thanks again...

Re: What is acceptable ?

HI there,

Average Ping Response time is fine : 37ms

Tracert looks good too

Just out of interest - have you tried:

- Connecting the router direct via Ethernet
- Disabled antivirus / malware etc

I'd say if you could do both these are run a speed test from www.speedtest.net and post the results. As now is peak time.

Hope this helps.

Re: What is acceptable ?

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated. Yes I've tried connecting the modem directly (ethernet connection) and have disabled A/V and spyware.
Speed test below (best result of the day )

Re: What is acceptable ?

but more realistically they will tell you to restart your modem and that either nothing is wrong with your connection or you need a tech visit who will tell you it is latency. You'll go round and round in circles and nothing will get fixed. If you're lucky and very persistent in around 6-12 months something may get done about it.......good luck!!!!

Re: What is acceptable ?

Maybe there are problems today locally. In another thread I see a guy saying his speeds are poor today and he lives relatively near me (near Peterborough). Speeds are still poor now 11:20pm. If it continues I will certainly be chasing it up. I don't expect full speed, but getting 5% or less of the stated speed is unacceptable.

i never trust speed tests especially speedtest.net as it rarely gives me anything remotely near the 20meg i get from using the newsgroups

Re: What is acceptable ?

^^ Same - I also have 20meg and never get a correct reading from speedtest.net no-matter what time of day it is, or what day it is.

However, when downloading files, i usually do use gamefiles @ virginmedia.com FTP site, but download using a 3rd party program, Free Download Manager. (FDM)

To Test your speed, if you can. Use FDM and install on vista (works fine) download the same size of file on a monday morning (Between 9am and 12noon) and monday evening (between 4pm and 10pm) again repeat on the wednesday and friday. On saturday try 9am until 12pm morning and 4-7pm evening and again at around 11pm onwards saturday night.

Possible?

lol. i know it does sound mad, but it will give you an idea of when problems are occuring, run a tracert and ping before you run each of your tests and record the data in a log.

use DUmeter to monitor bandwidth
