6.2Mbps on BT but only quoted 3.5Mbps on Be*

Hello,

We have BT Business Broadband at work, which is ADSL, and we get a nice speed of 6.2Mbps (Synced at around 7.2). The other day I rang Be*There who quoted the maximum speed I could get on ADSL2+ was... 3.5Mbps!!!

How does that work? I thought ADSL2+ was supposed to be FASTER than ADSL is?

They told us we're around 3KM from the exchange, which sounds about right going by the graph attached.

Because of this news, we're not going to be moving to Be*There, which is a great disappointment because being a web designer I could really have used the up to 2.5Mbps upload instead of the 446Kbps I get on BT...

It might be because they have different equipment at the exchange and the BE* equipment handles the line differently.

Re: 6.2Mbps on BT but only quoted 3.5Mbps on Be*

Does anyone know what the cheapest way to get a better line into the building is? Be it fibre or ethernet.

We have already quoted from ntl:telewest business for a 10/10 line and it was £750 a month plus installation costs. The 100/100 was even more, understandably. The reason for such a connection is we want to set up our own private data center for our clients to host their co-located servers and also so we can host our own servers and manage them better. Its also more flexible than hosting in a commercial data center. The nearest one is 40 miles from here in Newcastle.

Have you spoke to BT themselves if not you could try BT Local Business they are like a BT sales team but they are based in your local area go to http://www.btlocalbusiness.co.uk/ and put in your postcode and it will give you the number for your local office.

You wouldn't get 2.5 UP Annex M (upload +) would not be suitable for a long line.

You should be ok with their standard 1.3 UP. They might just be estimating based on the BT database or the line length.

You could make a rough guestimate based on your current Downstream Sync speed, downstream attenuation and SNR.

http://www2.farina1.com/ADSL/default.aspx If you wack the figures into there it Will make a Guess about what sort of speed you will probably receive based on the figures you supplied.

Although it is just a guess it cannot account for any irregularity's on your line.etc
