Have you tried rebooting your modem? Unplug it for 30 seconds or so, then plug it back in. That's what I had to do for the upgrade to kick in.

Well we were due for upgrade from 4 to 10 in February. Did speed test today with result of 4.13 rebooted cable modem and speed tests (have done several) are now reading around 5.6.
|
Go into the modem configuration: -
http://192.168.100.1/
Username and password are both "root". If it says "Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 10240000 bps" under operation configuration, then you've been upgraded. Speed tests aren't always accurate. Sometimes they can be way off.

Wonder if this is a normal fluctuation on the 4 speed or have we been upgraded, but aren't receiving the full 10 for some reason?
I've checked the modem on the Virgin site and it says ours should work with new speed. We do have 2 computers connected through a router which was also rebooted, so I'll just have to wait and see what happens next.

A few ways you can check to see if you've been upgraded.
- Check the modem config
- Try downloading from a multisource site like a premium news server (Though might still read lw on an over subscribed UBR)
- On a speed test site (though ignore the download and see what the upload says (about 370Kb for 4 Mb and 500Kb for 10Mb)

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
Stafford has been done and my modem config shows the correct downstream rate but I still only get 5Mb/s.
The strange thing is that its never more and never less.
Tried various speed tests
Tried downloading from my Usenet provider using multiple connections
Tried downloading from a couple of local servers I have access to
In all cases getting 610-630KB/s (5Mbps) constant no matter what time of day.
Now I'm not unhappy about this especially as it seems to be very consistent, but I was wondering if there is something preventing me achieveing the full speed atm.
Cheers
Ben
Edit: Additional info - I am pretty much getting the full upload speed (490-500Kbps) according to speed tests
I am using a NTL:Home 120 modem. Is that likely to be the problem?

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
has anyone considered that the info given may mean that upgrades for the areas shown as 'February' are announcing that is when the work will start, not when it will finish?

Where's my upgrade?
If you're a Broadband L customer and want to know when you'll be receiving your free upgrade to our new, super-speedy 10Mb service, then you've come to the right place
Nope, definitely says "when you'll be receiving your free upgrade"

Ok I cracked and rang CS, where an Indian Lady with a hell of an echo said, "We are not completed" "We are not completed" so I said thank you and hung up !

Thanks Sigma. I've gone into link you gave and note below what it shows:
Signal
This page provides important information about the status and quality of the communications between your cable modem and the cable modem network.
Downstream Channel
The data shown in the table below provides information about the signal coming from the network to your cable modem. Downstream Status OperationalChannel ID 0Downstream Frequency 331000000 HzModulation QAM256Bit Rate 10240000 bpsPower Level 1.44 dBmVSignal to Noise Ratio 37 dB
Upstream Channel
The data shown in the table below provides information about the signal being transmitted to the network from your cable modem. Upstream Status OperationalChannel ID 3Upstream Frequency 25800000 HzBit Rate 384000 bpsPower Level 41.00 dBmV
Can you tell me what this shows?

.
Sorry to take up more space on this topic, but this is what I get when checking with SpeedTest. Not sure that Dublin is the closest server to Fife, but SpeedTest says it is.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
If I've been upgraded why is the download rate still so low?
Hope there's an easy answer to this as I can't go through with phoning help line in India again. Did so several months ago and it was a complete fiasco, nearly wrecking my computer.
