At £25 a disc my blu-ray and hd-dvd collection is still on the very small side!
It's a shame really as the xbox drive works quite nicely with a vista computer, that and toshiba have been fitting them to a fair few laptops lately for not much more.
Then again dell have been fitting blu-ray drives for a whole lot more!

Any adopter of new technology always runs a risk that it won't stick. After all was there any compensation for betamax users, or even the ill fated laserdisc users, when that stuff fizzled out?
The real question here should be, rather like the betamax vs VHS format battle, is which was technically the best? Has the consumer got a good deal here, or are we being saddled with the "money talks" option?

Or, indeed, the people who payed hundreds, if not thousands of pounds for their DAT and DCC (Digital Compact Cassette) players. Or those in America who went out and bought a Divx (the original Rental DVD format with automatic disc expiry, not the PC codec) player? Admittedly, those with Divx players can still play normal DVDs.
Anyone who adopts a new technology (and because of their still relatively low sales, I include HD-DVD and Blu Ray in this) runs the risk of that technology failing and being abandoned.

As I understand it, in terms of hardware, Blu Ray is the best, purely because it offers greater storage. In terms of the interactive experiance, HD-DVD is best.

the other advantage Blu-ray has over HD DVD is that it can handle 7.1 surround and HD DVD couldn't. (Already speaking in past tense!)

I've still got the very first Sony Betamax C5 video recorder and it still works
Back on topic,
This story has made me laugh I was waiting to see who would win, and was hoping that Blue-ray would win, now I can go out and by the PS3 player.

£25 per disc?!  Where do you buy them? HMV?!

All HD DVDs are region free.
Some BDs are region free.
Virtually all of my HD DVDs are imports.
I also have a few BD imports (the Blade Runner Ultimate Ltd. Edition Briefcase thing, The Terminator, Total Recall).

I thought it could.
Also, isn't (well, "wasn't") support for Dolby Digital Plus & Dolby TrueHD mandatory for HD DVD players, yet only optional for BD players?
I think for the consumer the main advantage HD DVD had was that it was region free.
Hmm. And also a finalised standard. Still, at least my PS3 can handle Profile updates, unlike current standalones.
