Problems using my ntlworld email when not connected directly to my ntl cable modem.

Hi
I am running Office 2007 via XP Pro on a laptop and have just arrived at a new workplace and have connected to their wireless network.
The internet is perfect and I can RECEIVE emails from my ntlworld email account just as well as I can when connected at home to the cable modem.
But, I cannot send any emails. They all just stick in the Outbox.
I receive a message quoting a 0x800ccc67 error code.
I have disabled my (Norton) security and it makes no difference.
I have rebooted to no effect.
I have removed and reinstalled the email (ntlworld) account and it makes no difference.
I have installed the email settings manually (after the automatic reinstallation was "unable to connect to the smtp server") and it makes no difference.
I read somewhere about SMTP Authentication and enabled this, using my normal user name and Password and this does not seem to work either - but to be frank, I don't really know what this means!
Surely I should be able to use my NTLWorld pop 3 account when not connected to the NTL cable?
What am I doing wrong please?
Thanks.
Nick

Re: Problems using my ntlwoels email when not connected directly to my ntl cable mode

I was about to post a similar question.

I am connected to a relatives BT internet service and can happily use the net and receive emails, but can't send.

I assume it is to do with SMTP authentication but none of the available settings proves useful. Is SMTP Authentication the answer and do NTLWorld email addresses support this.

Re: Problems using my ntlwoels email when not connected directly to my ntl cable mode

You will not be able to send email using the ntlworld server unless you are directly connected to them from a Virgin Media connection. It's a security / anrti spam type measure.

If you want to send email using your VM account as the reply address, you have to fiddle with your email client and set the smtp (send) server settings to you work's server.

Re: Problems using my ntlwoels email when not connected directly to my ntl cable mode

Afaik, the NTL/VM SMTP server (outgoing) will not accept connections from a non VM IP address. It's one way to stop the server being used as a Spam gateway. Similarly, VM webspace can only be updated from a VM address.
You can login to webmail if you need to send a mail from VM while at work, but that's all :-(

Thanks, I assume this is the same for Virgin.Net email addresses too.

Re: Problems using my ntlwoels email when not connected directly to my ntl cable mode

Thank you for your advice Rob. I must admit that that seems to kill the point of having email, if you can only ever use it to send messages when plugged into your ISP's own piece of wire! Out of interest, is this typical of all providers, or is it just another Virgin cost-cutting measure, dressed up as a "security measure"?

Re: Problems using my ntlworld email when not connected directly to my ntl cable mode

This is why many people now use email such as hotmail, gmail or similar so it doesn't matter where they log on.

This send only when "on net" has been in place for many years.

It isn't about cost cutting really, it's about the misuse of VM's servers and prevention of same. I suppose VM could enable other authentication measures for remote clients that are "off net", but that would affect on net customers too, adding to the complications and errors that many customers already get confused about in their setups. It's easier for them just to autheniticate based on the IP.

Re: Problems using my ntlworld email when not connected directly to my ntl cable mode

its pretty common for ISPs email servers to only allow mail to be sent by people on their network otherwise how do you know if they're customers?

it's also getting more common for some ISPs to block access to other mail servers but their own so they can 'control' any spam eminating from their customers

Re: Problems using my ntlworld email when not connected directly to my ntl cable mode

Thanks again Rob. I guess that I have just become rather cynical about NTL over the years. The strange thing is, is that I found the following on the Virgin site, but it doesn't in fact seem to work.
Regards.

Thank you for this info.
I wonder if VM will ever actually tell us when it will begin to work on the NTL platform, or whether we will just have to keep trying it out, untill it does?

Re: Problems using my ntlworld email when not connected directly to my ntl cable mode

Thank you once again for all your assistance.

In the meantime, is there any way that I can set-up NTLworld Webmail so that any emails I send from it are automatically synced/copied to the "Sent" folder in my Outlook, when I am unable to connect directly to my NTL cable modem (i.e. when using WiFi off site)?

If not, are there any webmail services (e.g. G/Y mail etc...) that I can subscribe to, that I can run in Outlook and would make emails appear to come from my ntlworld email address?
regards.

Re: Problems using my ntlworld email when not connected directly to my ntl cable mode

If you tell your client (outlook) to use IMAP mail instead of POP mail, you will be fine.

You can connect via IMAP from any client and always see all your mail / folders etc.

In a nutshell, POP connections download mail from the mailserver to the client, then delete it from the mailserver. If a 2nd POP client connects, there is no mail (it was dleted)
IMAP connections download mail from the mailserver and mark it as downloaded.
If a 2nd IMAP client connects, they will also download all mail & folder structure.

Re: Problems using my ntlworld email when not connected directly to my ntl cable mode

Wow. this sounds like an ideal solution. So do I just adjust my Outlook settings for NTL, from POP to IMAP?
Just to be clear:
I want to be able to automatically retain copies of all my incoming and outgoing emails in Outlook on my laptop, that I send/read under the following scenarios:
a) At home, using that laptop connected to my own NTL cable modem;
b) Off-site, using my laptop, connected to another ISP (e.g. the offices' that I currently work out of);
c) When using NTL webmail on anybody else's PV and ISP.
Would IMAP resolve all the above?
Thank you so much for your help.
