Re: I see the christmas slow down has started

Tell me about it! I've been down for ages, i keep going offline for a few hours at a go!

Really starting to annoy me. I'm on Bagueley too, are we the only ones that get hammered? I've got 800ms pings on loads of websites, google.com is between 200ms and 800ms and external sites have me at 150ms for pings.

Download rate is 16.7kbps or 160k. I should be at 400k but i never get that these days anyway.

I even changed my DNS, as that used to be the problem five years ago. But that didn't really make it much better.

Virgin really have messed up this network. Has this hapepend before? Technical support were a pain in the ar**.

Cheers,

50meg would be on a different frequency spectrum so it wouldnt clash with normal lower tier users (docsis 3 for the 50meg whilst still on docsis 1/1.1/2 for the lower tiers)

No.

It may be a different frequency but that isn't the problem. The problem is that Virgin's network is too slow and external bandwidth is not enough. When an area gets slow, it's because the bandwidth from the local routers to the main Virgin network is not enough, and when everything gets slow it's because the main Virgin network does not have enough bandwidth.

With most people back at work my speeds during the day have returned to normal.

It will be interesting to see if the price and terms for the new 50Mb will lure the 20Mb heavy down loaders and whether their migration to Docsis 3 will reduce the contention on the Baguley server.

I can't see myself going for it. 20 meg is fast enough for the 3-400GB/month I am currently doing, and as I get it for only £25 the projected price point of 50meg (£47) seems unlikely to interest me.

What I would be interested in is a better upload speed. It would be very useful for online backup/bittorrent/etc. Reports at the moment suggest the 50meg will have an upload speed of 1.5Mb, which is a joke really.

Re: I see the christmas slow down has started

My usage of the internet is quite modest and I have been able to work around the STM to a large extent. Upping my BB from 2 to 4Mb has sorted me out but it would be great if I could drop back down to the lowest tier and still be guaranteed a usable connection at a more reasonable cost.

I wish I had a crystal ball and could see what our service will be like over the next 12 months. Mind if I had one I would just check next weeks lottery results and buy out Virginmedia, recable Manchester, get a new computer ,...buy a dessert island.........

Call retentions and tell them you only want to pay for the slower speed (and only need the slower speed) but that because of STM you are forced to have the 4meg package. Demand they give you it for the cost of the 2meg package and they will.

No-one in their right mind pays full wack for Virgin services when a single phone call gets you a massive discount. I pay £25/month for 20meg.

Some of the recent posters on CF have tried the old "cut my price or I leave" ploy - lately, VM appear to be saying "bye bye".

btw, if you do try this, may I suggest you don't "demand anything" - asking nicely often works better (imho).
