Re: Please help me to set up my netgear router WNR834B

First turn OFF your PC and modem!

For Wired setups (not Wireless) it should be a simple case of plugging your VM Modem's Ethernet cable into the WAN Port on the router, plugging another Ethernet cable (supplied with router) into your PC and then plugging the other end into one of the 4 ports on the back of the Netgear router then power up the modem first and wait till it's booted, then apply power to the router so it picks up the modems config, then power up your PC and test the connection!

That's HOW it should work for a wired setup if all goes OK assuming you are using Ethernet not USB and you don't need Wireless! If you don't use Wireless you need to DISABLE the wireless part of the router so no one can piggyback onto your connection!

If you want to use use Wireless, then that's more effort to setup as you need to configure the router with some from of encryption it has inbuilt, decide on an encryption key and then configure each PC for wireless access to your router, so your PC's need a wireless adaptor too!

So what method do you want, Wired, Wireless or Both?

Re: Please help me to set up my netgear router WNR834B

Are the laptops Vista or Windows XP? I don't run Vista unfortunately! Make sure the modem is plugged into router too!

See this page for configuring the router: http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101676.asp

You need to set region to UK and Channel to 11! Also the SSID is just a name to identify YOUR router so call it what you want, then enable WPA-PSK option and you'll probably be asked to enter a key, this could be the tricky part so see here if you get stuck:

http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101675.asp

The WPA-PSK key is basically a password (between 8 and 63 characters) that only YOU should know, so make up something and write it down so you can use it configure the laptops, it can be upper/lowercase and contain numbers eg: MyWPAKEY1234545

So what you've done is set the router up with an a new SSID and locked it with an encrypted password that only you can use to gain access to the router.

In the router settings just check this section, Maintenance > Router Status and you should see an IP Address and two Domain Name Server adresses, if so this means the router has connected to your modem!

Now the laptops! Most have wireless connections so make sure they are enabled (see your laptops manual for enabling wireless) and usually have an icon in the System Tray for the settings. But for now try the first link I posted then scroll down the page to the Configuring Wireless Clients and try to follow that for configuring the laptops!

The SSID will be the name you used when you setup the router so look for that in the list of Wireless connections and the WPA-PSK key will be the one you made up and hopefully wrote down! Once those are in the laptop should connect to the router and be able to connect to the internet! Same applies for the secomd laptop, see how you go and post back if stuck!
