Question DVD recorder to create DVDs for playback on a standard DVD player

I have a fairly simple question. DoeS aNyBody know if you can buy a DVD recorder that will record to DVD-R that you can then playback on a standard DVD player?

If so can you recommend a cheapish one?

The purpose of this is to be able to transfer video from camcorder onto DVD and then give the DVDs to people who have a standard DVD player. Therefore, I do not want a DVD recorder that only writes in a special mode that can only be played back on a DVD recorder.

I can do the above by streaming the video to my PC and then creating a DVD image and burning that to a DVD-R but I need to be able to this in real-time with a DVD recorder. Having never owned a DVD recorder before, I am unsure whether this is possible.

Thanks!

Claires nan has a phillips one that has a firewire port on the front for recording however I suspect it records in divx. It certainly plays it back. It is for sale at Asda so have a look next time you in.

Re: DVD recorder to create DVDs for playback on a standard DVD player

That is the sort of thing I am looking for but whilst DivX is no problem for me (as I have DVD player that can play DivX and XviD) it would be no use to who I want to give DVDs to!

I've got a lite-on with a firewire port but it's the hard disk type (it's a pretty standard feature on most, some even have usb) so you can edit the video, set chapters etc then burn it as a standard dvd. Obviously this cost a fair bit more than a record-to-disk only unit.

Re: DVD recorder to create DVDs for playback on a standard DVD player

I did not really want to mess around with editing the video - just wanted to transcribe the camcorder video to standard DVD in real time.

It is looking like this may not be a feature offered by any DVD recorder.

Re: DVD recorder to create DVDs for playback on a standard DVD player

Looking at the manual for my Panasonic DMR EX75EB, it looks as though it will do this via S Video or A/V.

It certainly finalises disks as DVD-Vs that can be played on ordinary players.

I'll see if I can find a link to a downloadable manual so you can look for yourself...

Re: DVD recorder to create DVDs for playback on a standard DVD player

OK, go here, allow scripts if you block them & enter dmrex75eb in the search box. You should then be able to download the manual & check.

It seems to be quite a slow site at the moment though...

Re: DVD recorder to create DVDs for playback on a standard DVD player

I just download the video from the camcorder to my PC and use either the sony software that came with the camera to transcribe it to DVD or DVDSanta

Now that is the piece of information I was looking for - thanks!

I will have another search for units than can do this.

Any DVD recorder that you can buy today should have the ability to finalise the disk. You just have to remember to do it

Re: DVD recorder to create DVDs for playback on a standard DVD player

Most of the Panasonic DVD REcorders have a firewire link to go from your DV camera into it.
You then record to either the recorder's built in hard drive or straight on to DVD.
It should allow you to finialise the DVd and then be able to be played in the majority of players.
