Video/Audio file converter.

I have a friend who is having problems sending a video file via OE. It is one he has taken with his digital camera and I suspect the file is to large for OE to send. Am I correct in thinking there is a limit to the file size OE can cope with or did I just dream that ?

I have two IP's so as a test I tried to send myself a couple of similar files from my HD. The larger ones choked before sending fully but the one that was just over 5 meg went through fine.

Does anyone know a good ( free ) file converter that I can recommend to him? These files are MVI files ATM.

Jim.

Re: Video/Audio file converter.

instead of email arrange via email for all those who want the video to be online and direct transfer it across via msn. Or you could split it up with winrar and send it in bits

Hjsplit will do it all for free (the file split method that is)

Re: Video/Audio file converter.

Thanks for the reply Zing, don't think he uses Msn. I have Winrar but I am not sure he is up to using the split file method either. I suppose he could download a trial version of a file converter as a one off solution.

Was my assumption correct re the large files causing OE to choke?

Jim.

PS. What is the max file size that the likes of Putfile, Image Shack etc allow. If they do allow MVI files he could upload it for his mates to download.

Jim.

Re: Video/Audio file converter.

Hi
When you said about using a file converter.
What do you want to convert them into?
Into a different format such as avi or mpg?

Re: Video/Audio file converter.

You can alter the timeout on your email accounts:

tools/accounts/(your account)/properties/advanced/server timouts

change it from 1 min to 5 and try sending again

Re: Video/Audio file converter.

a bit of googling suggested changing the file extension to avi & using a free prog called stoik video converter to output a compressed file. It looks like you will be limited by the codecs you have installed, though??

Afaik the file size limit isn't down to OE, rather the size of the inbox, which can only take a max 'real world' file size of about 7MB.

The idea of Image Shack, etc may be worth investigating, but I have no idea of max file sizes.

I would assume that WMV files would be what he might be thinking of, I don't think he will be worried about a loss caused by the file size reduction.

I have noticed whilst having a play around myself that when you attach the MVI file in OE it automatically adds an AVI extension to the file. Just tried sending a 9 meg one from my Ntl addy to my Zen one ( Zen mailbox is much bigger than the Ntl allowance) and even with server time set to five minutes the green bar scrolls right to the end then it freezes.

I'll put a few of your suggestions to him when he gets in touch again, he is an ex colleague from my Hotpoint days, moved North about two years ago, Aberdeen in fact.

Thanks for all your replies.

Jim.

Try http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html it's free, easy to use, converts pretty much anything to pretty much anything. I think NTL limit is 10Mb.

Thats pretty much what I was going to say...! I use SUPER a lot and I have friends who use it too (because of it's ease of use )

I'll be using it this week to convert some .mov films into something more usable elsewhere (prob .avi)

Thanks to both of you.

Re: Video/Audio file converter.

It's moons ago since I used OE, but I used to use the newsgroups, and asked this very question about attachments. Don't forget, when you send files, 40% of the file size is added, because of encoding. So, say your max email message size is 20Mb, the max size of your attachment will be 12Mb.

Also check out VirtualDub:

Initially, it's not easy to get to grips with the user interface. But once you have, it's easy to use and powerful - and it's free!

Re: Video/Audio file converter.

He could just upload it as it is to free webspace and invite people to download it direct... no quality problems then...
