Re: Tiscali- good value
To the OP. I've been doing a lot of looking into different suppliers recently as I'm moving somewhere that Virgin isn't rolled out to. Anyway I just wish I could keep my services as I didn't realise Sky install costs were so mad (£350 for HD??) and unless you can get ADSL2 from BEthere then Virgin is probably the overall best ISP for speeds, and is probably faster than BEthere and other ADSL2 supplier real speeds. I guess what I'm saying that overall Virgin is the best, not the cheapest, but the overall best imo. If the extra £30 isn't a priority it's worth the extra ££..
I think Tiscali already own Pipex which has rapidly gone downhill from being one of the ISP's with the best reputation to another run-of-the-mill ISP like Tiscali where most of the comments are negative..

Re: Tiscali- good value
Just another post to tell a quick tale of woe with Tiscali.
My father had been with them since they were Lineone. As of about 6 months ago he had terrible difficulty getting an ADSL carrier, sometimes taking up to 10 minutes! Tiscali support were (predictably) no help whatsoever - after 4 months utterly unreliable internet I suggested that they go for Virgin. He's now on 2 for £20 and couldn't be happier.

Re: Tiscali- good value
You can add Toucan to the list as its part of the Pipex group which is Tiscali but they seem to running as three separate companies. I have an offer from Toucan of line rental, calls free 24/7 without ringing off after 57 min, and upto 8Mb broadband.
The only problem they say I have to get BT to take the phone line over before they do, yet BT say Toucan can install the line.

And since i'm in NW1 of London, I can get Tiscali TV too getting the top TV package for just another £15, so lets compare this with Virgin Media:
Comparisons:
Telephone line rental: £0 £10.50(Virgin Media)
Free weekend call pack: £0 £0.50 (M Telephone Package)(Virgin)
TV(Top) and Broadband 2MB: £19.99 £39 (TV and Broadband)(Virgin)
Saving: £30!
Now the only thing Tiscali need to do is launch a mobile service which is being sorted out as I type, Tiscali is interested in aquiring Pipex, Pipex currently owns Toucan Talk which offers a mobile service.
Virgin Media's M Telephone package charges 3p per minute plus 6p connection whilst Tiscali charges 5p an hour during evenings.
Think I might give it a go.

Re: Tiscali- good value
My office BB (only 2Mb) has been ok, mind you I don't know about the evening performance nor week end. I am thinking of leaving VM BB because of bad evening and weekend speed. I was thinking of Tiscali, now I have second thoughts. How about BT themselves? or any other suggestions? (not BE, its not here yet unfortunately)

It really depends on what you want from an ISP. What kind of usage are you requiring ? Do you require webspace, if so, how much ? Also, do you need several email accounts etc etc. Bear in mind that ISP's like Tiscali and BT heavily traffic shape their networks, hence the reason I wouldn't touch either of them, with an extremely large barge pole.
Have a look at the Thinkbroadband forums, to see who's hot, and who's not.

Bt keep traffic managing me in the evenings ever since it went from 40gb to unlimited....
On the plus side i've never once been moaned at for bandwidth usage and they seem to have finally gotten the traffic management working properly (it used to throttle HTTP to sub 512kps and leave everything else untouched apart from P2p) now it seems to thorttle everything to ~ 2mbit and p2p more than that.
But from a gaming point of view the pings are usually pretty decent and i'm getting it free anyway.
Its worth looking around though and reading reviews.

Re: Tiscali- good value
This is the problem with the big boys, who are obsessed with profit margins, to satisfy the shareholders. Why have 12,000 users on a BT central, when you can cram in 24,000 with the use of traffic management.
Think I'll stick with my un-managed connection thanks.

Re: Tiscali- good value
Having been put off Virgin Media ADSL service, I am looking at three others namely Tiscalli, BT, and Post Office. Can anyone say which is the best of these three?? Regretably BE is not available on the relevant phone line.
