question for you lot - upscale old Xbox1?

okay,

trickie question, I want to be able to upscale an old Xbox1 to 1080p, does any1 know if there is a scart to hdmi upscaler around on the market (I've already hunted on google but only find things bout the 360 or PS3) which arent scart/composite to 1080p converters...

I know its a long shot but perhaps some of you chaps/chapettes know about such a thing

I think you would have to have some type of software built in that attempts to create an upscaled version abit like some DVD players have.
I don't think there is anything you could hook up that would do the job. I might be wrong though.

NOW if you want a long shot, try and find me a free open standard windows XP device driver that can
Bond (I.E group several Network cards together so as to make a faster virtual network)
2 or more 1gigabit NCs so as to connect to the standard linux bonding devices (freeNAS).

It's possible to get the original Xbox to output in 720p directly. Would that not get you a better picture than SCART SD upscaled to 1080p?

If you could find an upscaler capable of taking the 576i PAL analogue RGB SCART from the Xbox & turning it into 1080p HDMI, it'd probably be pretty bloody expensive (see the prices of the upscalers popper linked to!).

And the Xbox itself would still be outputting standard 576i over RGB SCART...

I think brundles' idea is your best bet. But it means using component not HDMI.

And it isn't totally straight forward...

Only NTSC Xboxes can use the Xbox "HD AV Component Pack" as I think it was called (something like that... there are also 3rd party component leads for the Xbox). As such, the Xbox component leads were only available in North America (& I guess Japan too) AFAIK. Although you can find them on eBay...

So, unless you have an American Xbox, the only way to get it to output in 720p or 1080i over component is to get it "modded".

This is legally dubious (there are plenty of legitimate uses IMO, but unfortunately the EU Copyright Directive & the US' DMCA consider modchips to be devices for circumventing copy protection), so I won't give any links... but you'll find a lot of info on Xbox-Scene.

With a modded Xbox, you can use the "Enigmah video mode switcher" to change it from PAL to NTSC.

With it in NTSC mode, you can then use the component video leads, & enable the HD (720p & 1080i) options now available in the dashboard's video settings.

But... this only allows you to play games at 720p & 1080i, as the Xbox itself doesn't upscale DVDs or anything (upscaling over component is prohibited by CSS restrictions). And only certain US games were actually made at 720p.

However... as the Xbox is now modded, you can then install the excellent "Xbox Media Centre" application, which will let you use the Xbox as a region-free DVD player, & will also play divx/xvid videos & MP3s & so on, either stored on the Xbox's own HDD, or streamed from your PC. And, as a bonus, as XBMC doesn't care about CSS restrictions, you can use it as an upscaling DVD & media player, at 720p or 1080i over component.

Although I have a 360, I still use my original Xbox for this very reason... It makes an excellent media centre, & is IMO better than the 360 in many ways for media centre functions (divx/xvid playback! FTP transfer as well as UPnP streaming! R1 DVDs!). My 360 only gets used for media files if they're HD (as the Xbox can't really handle WMV HD or H.264).
