Definition of inappropriate language?

How long until something like this makes it's way into MS Word or IE?

I love Linux and the XBOX 360, so yesterday I tried to include the word "LINUX" in the motto section on XBOX Live. I was stunned when I got a message saying "Your motto contains inappropriate language. Please try again".

Re: Definition of inappropriate language?

The original story is posted here. Apparently the people at Xbox-Scene tried this with Unix and Linux and both got rejected:
Quote:
I tried this myself to make sure it wasn't any kinda hoax ... I tried to put just the word 'linux' as motto to my gamertag and indeed ... Microsoft refused it. I also tried 'unix' ... but that didn't pass the Redmond filter either. Seriously, how low can you go MS?
There is some speculation that it might be because Linux is apparently a copyrighted word.

The term Linux is a trademark and as I understand it copyright is a whole different bunch of bananas and wouldn't apply here. Also significant sections of the Linux community went to law back in the 1990s to secure Linus Torvalds ownership of the trademark in order for it to be freely used by companies and individuals everywhere.

Therefore I think this is more to do with M$'s overt hostility to everything Linux and Open Source. They may say: "Oh you can't use that because it's a trademark" but they know very well that neither Mr Torvalds nor anyone else in the Linux community would bat an eyelid let alone go to law over something like this.

Get your own back: install Ubuntu on your PC!

Re: Definition of inappropriate language?

Didn't the MS Word spell-checker used to suggest 'Windows' as a replacement word for 'Linux'?

Thankfully, the only fault in the last few years has been one that knocked out the return path and so hit the TV too. They can complain about the PC all they want but that doesn't affect the TV!

But no, I wouldn't be telling them that. There are still 2 Windows laptops around the house for that - one a work one and the other belongs to the missus so I'm not allowed to reformat it!

Still waiting for bt's to tell us how to clear the cookies on the xbox360

I did read somewhere they actually asked "have you cleared your cookies" when someone phoned to reporting that xbox live was running poorly.

Don't know, but Word 97 with US language set the thesaurus would reply to "I'd like to see Bill Gates dead" with "I'll drink to that"

It's probably to make up for all the morons who insist on typing M$ instead of MS
