Red face Webspace

Apparently I am only limited to 55mb of webspace with Virgin. I have spent ages on my website but now when i am uploading content I am getting that i have exceeded disk quota.

According to Virgin this could be because ive ran out of space, but I still have lots more work i want to do on my website, and he said that theres no way to increase the webspace from say 55 to 100mb

55mb Isnt enough for what i want. So unless i compress ALL my images on the site to half the size to free up about 10mb then i am screwed.

How am i supposed to know how much webspace i have used and how much i have left? I use terrapin FTP and theres no option in there that says ive uploaded ##mb of data.

I'm so annoyed right now, they should provide more space or give an option to upgrade your webspace. they are upgrading to 20mb from 10mb but webspace is un affected.

Re: Webspace

im annoyed because i dont know how much space i have left, it doesnt say anywhere.

I thought 55mb would have been enough but now if i half the content i have on my site it will take weeks, compressing all the images and re adding them to my webpages.

It should say you have 5mb of storage left and then you know not to upload too much data.

Re: Webspace

Surely though you *do* know two things:

1. How much space they gave you to start with, and
2. What files you are uploading.

If you know that you only get 55mb of space you just need to keep an eye on how much you're uploading.

Re: Webspace

No doubt you have a copy of your website on yourlocal computer - after all you wouldn't want to rely on just the copy on the remote webserver without your backup. From your local computer you'll know the total size, even without tools on the webserver.

Remember the virgin media space is basic. You get much more control, tolls, functions with a paid for hosting service.

Re: Webspace

I've looked at your pictures, they're not that big?
You must have something else taking up a big chunk.
I've a website on Virgin space with 426 images on it - they take up 9mb - and some of them are reasonable sized photos.

---------- Post added at 20:11 ---------- Previous post was at 20:04 ----------

I lie - some of them are ridiculously big.!
You have 500k 3072px x 2304px images squashed into a web page.
Resize man - no need.

Re: Webspace

No not all of them are that big, theres a few that are 450kb though, some at 800kb.

If i can reduce them in size to say 200kb i should be able to free up some space.

I checked my folders and i am using 42mb of my 55 by the looks of it, i did take off some music which freed up about 9mb.

Re: Webspace

If you're struggling for space, why don't you create a Photobucket account and put your images on there and simply hotlink to them?

Re: Webspace

Well i resized some images that were quite big. from 600kb and 800kb to about 50kb.

The image quality isnt great but i am using infraview, so i just selected quality at 25 and set to resize to 25% of original and also to do it at 300 DPI.

Im not sure if thats the best setting to use or not? perhaps someone knows the correct settings?

Re: Webspace

The pics of your gaff?
Image quality is dreadful because you've resized them, but not resized what your webpage is coded to display them at!

Look at this: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/carlwhittaker/House.html

Say, the bottom picture for convenience.

Now look at this: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/carlwhi...20-%200020.jpg

You're stretching the image beyond it's parameters.
Of course it's going to look bad.

Resize the image (to I dunno, don't use Irfan - 30-35% say) and then code the page properly to show the proper size. Or resize the image in the table - I presume those are tables on the page you're using.

Re: Webspace

Just a thought. Why on earth don't you log in to selfcare, and view the chart with your site usage on? That tells you what you have used and how much you have left

---------- Post added at 20:58 ---------- Previous post was at 20:48 ----------

PS: 3.5MB wma files for background sounds don't help. Plus VM can wipe your site off the face of the earth for having them on their, as it's a breach of copyrights
