Virgin.net / VM and Ping/routing problems.

i've been getting some real bad pings on games (cs:s mainly, but i've checked various other games etc and traceroutes and the ping is terrible in general) we're talking pings of over 220+ constantly . . i had better on 56k! years ago!#

i'm on the 'up to 8mb' plan, bundle one i think iirc?

this is the results of the traceroute earlier while the lag was hitting.

and i've tried it with various servers and all similair.... what i'm wondering is why it's sending it to the 'leeds' server first? shouldn't it be sending it to a more local one atleast (i'm in south wales, near swansea)

a friend who lives literally, yards away did a traceroute from his connection although he's not on VM, the first server it routes to is swansea's ntl server.

could this be the problem? the latency has dropped now to around 50+ which is sort of manageable. but can be annoying with strict servers. and it's also routing differently.

2 35 ms 35 ms 36 ms brnt-bam-2.inet.ntl.com [194.145.148.7]

is the first server in the list now, and as you can see. the ping is not inflated atall.

i've re-synced my router many times whilst the lag has been hitting to no avail.

anyone with any idea's ? i'm starting to get very, very annoyed with virgin recently. ( as it seems alot of people are), but in the few years that i have been with them, they've been generally a good isp, if not the best i've experienced thus far. just cant seem to get whats up with all these problems.

thanks anyway.

edited to add: i'm using a netgear DG834 v3 router which is updated. and its running DSL.

Re: Virgin.net / VM and Ping/routing problems.

I know that VM are upgrading their T3 core network with new Juniper kit, it was announced about a week ago.

how far away should your general service area be? as none of mine seem to be around the south wales area, so far i've had brent/leeds/guildford and now bmly? (bromly maybe?) client-xx-xx-xx-xx.bmly.adsl.virgin.net
