Re: 20 Meg From June
Well if I can get this now, Link: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedt...520617096.html
I bet when I get the upgrade, I will be close to 20meg.
Tried speednet and it could not do it I think my speed is too fast for it.

Virgin (not ntl) do not offer a guaranteed 10meg, anyone who tells you that is mis-informed. The difference is that if everything is working as it should you can get 10meg no matter how far you are from the 'exchange' - with ADSL you can never get the full speed if you are too far away.
In you case I would report a fault, you should be getting much better speeds than you are.

I don't think it's a fault. As I say, during the day I get the fastest speed possible 1.14MB/s ish. It's once it hits 6pm that suddenly I get 600k. Well, it's slightly below that. I can't see it being a contention issue, as I am sure not every neighbour comes home at exactly 6pm. But sure enough that's when the speed drops.
It's not a major issue. But to be fair, I am close enough to an exchange to get faster speeds than 10meg. Which makes £37 per month compared to UKonlines £19.99 looks rather cheap.
And of course, Skys offer look bloody marvellous.
Oh and yeah, still can't quite get my head around calling them Virgin. And yes the girls on the phone were naughty using tactics like that in order to try and keep me as a customer. And yes, when working properly, I prefer the "stability" of cable over ADSL. Just shocked they are increasing prices, when all around people seem to be dropping them.

Re: 20 Meg From June
for 19.99 it may well also slow down at peak periods, 6pm is when a lot of people online and it is a contended product, 600kB is a quite good speed for peak time.
Cable seems expensive because they have a different pricing model, they charge more for higher burst speed which is the traditional way and is done in most countries that use cable/adsl. The adsl in the uk is unique in it uses a one speed fits all approach which allows cheap high speeds but at a cost of reduced traffic allowances.

Whilst I agree with this, I don't have to like it, especially when things like that aren't told to you when you purchase it.

of course everyone is free to choose what service they use, well the lucky ones who are in a adsl and cable area that is.

Whilst that may be true (for the couple of people I know on UKOnline it isn't by the way) we are talking £19.99 versus £37 for pretty much the same speeds. I honestly believe Virgin should be keeping around the 10meg figure and lowering prices. Not increasing prices and offering speeds above what they can actually supply to some customers at the moment.
This doesn't even take into account people like my uncle, who after a shakey start with TalkTalk, now gets a steady 8mb speed all day long. Since they provided him with a new modem that plus into the ethernet port his connection is rock steady, and that's free! Free of charge with cheap phonecalls to boot. It does make Virgin look cheeky buggers if you ask me.
I am just reluctant to change because I don't want to start changing equipment from cable to adsl, set up routers again, mess with static I.P addresses etc etc. It's all that's keeping me from leaving to be fair (and of course I know that makes me a lazy sod )

the day I see 8Mb solid on ADSL I will buy a lottery ticket knowing it will be the winning one
I have 10Mb VM
and 8Mb Zen ADSL Pro (20:1 contention)
my VM NEVER drops below 8.8Mb
is connected 24/7 never fails!
unfortunatly I also need multiple fixed IP addresses
for this I use Zen (the best ADSL ISP I have found) the cost of this is £34 (not a lot cheaper than VM)
the ADSL loses sync on average 3 times a day.. connection speeds?
at very best 6.3Mb... at peak times sub 400 Kb/s
if VM would do fixed IPs I would scrap the ADSL without a thought
I am using a LINUX router that keeps detailed logs so I can be quite certain of these figures
BTW I live approx 1.6 KM from the exchange
another point.. because (it seems) there is less packet fragmentation and latency in the VM network VOIP also works considerably better!
just my 2p!

Have you looked at ntl:telewest business, they'll give you 5 statics via a CM, can't find the cost's on the webby though, if you're paying for two connections it might well be cheaper.

Re: 20 Meg From June
I couldnt give a rats about having 10/20/50mbit bandwidth.
The routers are overloaded and the packetloss is useless. I cant play games anymore between 4pm and 10pm weekdays and atall weekends. Ping spiking from 40-500ms and 100% PL now and then.
This is a pathetic and they know it aswell, they even admitided to me on a phone call. I am contracted for 3 more months. It is so frustrating, if they are traffic shaping it dosnt work. They need to Cut everyone on my UBR to 4mb and pay for that loss until it is upgraded.
It is absoloutley rubbish and i could never reccomend anyone to to get Cable in my area until they have upgraded.

Re: 20 Meg From June
Hello folks
I am on the 10 meg connection, and i guess like many of you i got a letter 3 days ago saying that my service will be upgraded to a 20 meg service for a extra £2 a month, which is not too bad, but for a 20 meg service surely the upload speed should be nearer to even over the 1 meg mark, not less than 800?
It looks like for me i wont be going for the 20 meg service when it rolls out, granted downloads should be quicker ( all depending where your d/loading stuff from ofc?) but if you are like me, one who plays quite alot of online fps which depends on the download and upload of information in-game would there really be any benefit and advantage between the 10 meg and 20 meg services?,
Btw can anyone please explain why when i do a speedtest on the london server i get this -
But when i select the faroe islands i go past the 10000 kbs
Btw i am not blonde, just a slight be tipsy

god knows I tried lol!
I am in an ex NTL area and cant find anyone even remotely interested in selling me a business service
as to Efour.. where are you? guess I am just lucky
though the net as a whole is suffering at the moment (expanding users faster than infrastructure)
I wouldnt be looking towards ADSL for any improvments
I remember a freind trying to play some online game (red alert I think) when we where using satellite internet (europe online) it was a great giggle with pings between 500ms to 2500ms! yes.. we had 10Mb before anyone else..
but it really did him no good at all
oh well! life goes on

After you mentioned VOIP another thing came to my mind, for all ipstream isps that do not use central plus (most of them) all traffic has to go through london, so if I ping my next door neighbour even if he was on the same isp as me I am looking at about 45-50ms. (22-25ms to london). Cable network routes much more efficiently within the uk, the central plus system is different since the isps use BTs wholesale peering rather then their own network allowing them to utilise a uk wide backbone. LLU providers I would think are also limited routing but may be improved over ipstream. The only isps with national backbones I can think of are energis, ntl/telewest, BT and janet.

If 10mbit users were throttled down to 4mbit shouldnt 4mbit users and the bottom tier also lose 60% of speed?

You could try speaking to ntl, see if they could price match.
