checklist for V+ installation?

Hi,
having V+ box installed on the 10th.
Whatching the forum over the last few weeks its obvious that I need to have some sort of checklist ready for when the intrepid engineer comes.
I have a Panasonic 37" plasma 1080i enabled , a Panasonic ram disc recorder which is connected to the plasma by a HD cable at the moment and a surround sound system.
I'm worried that the engineer will just disconnect everything ,plug in the V+ box and off he goes.
Should he make sure that the other systems are still working correctly?
Will he show me the HD pictures up and running ?
Will I have to fiddle around with tele settings etc. to get things working?
Help from anyone appreciated.
PLEASE let me say to virgin engineers on the forum , I know they are shoving more and more work at you to do in a shorter time but if I'm happy that everything works straight away I will not have engineers having to come back time and time again as you see posted in the forums.

Re: checklist for V+ installation?

Mine was installed last week. I don't have the luxury (yet!) of HD TV so it was a simple scart for the engineer!

Engineer was top notch and completely honest when he mentioned 'It was only the second one he had done' and he was still getting to grips with it. Set it up for 16:9 and that was it.

*Make sure that he sets up the HD though. The engineer mentioned if you don't set the HD connection up on the box first then you can lose the picture and it kind of makes things slightly complicated.

You shouldn't need any instruction to be honest.. all you need is the V+ button and the Home button

Just get him to bob the BBC HD channel on before he goes!

Make sure he demonstrates the V+ service, pause live programs, rewind etc. You will see from other threads that when you have the old set top box still working there are issues regarding registration. ( see V+ installed but no service). It will be easier for the engineer to sort it on the phone while he/she is there.

If my installation is anything to go by probably not.

Everything is set up with scart initially, once that finished I was itching to see the HD side of things so I started un-bagging the HDMI lead. My engineer told me that they have "had problems with that" and I should "wait 4 hours" before trying it because it had been known to cause the box to re-boot and lose service for up to 2.5 hours!

Needless to say, my curiosity got the better of me (that and the fact that his early arrival meant I was going out for the afternoon so a service loss for 2.5 hours wouldn't have mattered) and I plugged it in anyway.

And? any problems???
Or was it just an excuse for the engineer to flee the house and not set up HD?

Re: checklist for V+ installation?

No, no problems for me. unless it did re-boot and freeze whilst I was out of course. Although if it did it re-started on the same channel I'd left it on etc.

Whether it was just an excuse or not, I'm afraid I don't know. Other may be able to tell you whether this is true:-

The reason given was that "the hits for the box can come down in three stages" - The TV service, VOD (I think was the second, but could have been V+) and then HD. The gap between the first and last can be up to 4 hours. If you attempt to use the HD before the final hit has come down then you can get the problems.

So if that's true, you can't reasonably expect the VM engineer to sit around for four hours until the box has been hit I guess..
