Email problems
I haven't been able to get my email for the last couple of days. I use Thunderbird usually, but it didn't give any useful information, just "An error occurred with the POP3 mail server. Mail server pop.ntlworld.com responded:"
I tried Outlook Express which is still set up with my details and got the following message:
The server responded with an error. Account: '******@ntlworld.com', Server: 'pop.ntlworld.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR AVG POP3 Proxy Server: Cannot connect to the mail server!', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90
Normally I would check the Service Status page first, but I tried any got redirected to the Virgin website - really annoying as I can't find anything on there. Their page for selling me Broadband is easy enough to find, of course.
Has anyone got any ideas, or am I doomed to call tech support (assuming I can find their details)? I have Sygate Personal Firewall and AVG Anti-Virus installed on Windows XP Home Service Pack 2.

Re: Email problems
Can you connect via webmail? I'm wondering if your AVG antivirus is detecting something nasty looking at that error message?
Current Service Status pages are linked at the bottom of the forum. Service status 1 is former ntl areas.

Re: Email problems
Thanks, I tried Webmail and this was ok, nothing odd sitting in my Inbox. I disabled the email scanner in AVG and can now connect ok, though, so it does look as though AVG is to blame.
Thanks for your help, I'll dig about a bit and see if I can sort AVG out.

tried with all the passwords I have ever used and the one they gave me, but to no avail.

I don't use POP email but I would guess that's probably ok.

Re: Email problems
I still have the Outlook problem - nothing comes from ntlworld.com, although the webmail is fine.
I tried deactivating AVG mail scanner - but still get an error

If AVG has changed it, try changing the server name from 127.0.0.1 back to pop.ntlworld.com.

Re: Email problems
Hi all sorry to bring another email and OE problem up again, but i am having issues sending mails from OE.
I can receive emails fine, but when i go to send, it throws up the following error:
An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'pop.ntlworld.com', Server: 'smtp.ntlworld.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '421 aamtaout04-winn.ispmail.ntl.com connection refused from [***.**.***.***]', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 421, Error Number: 0x800CCC67
Can anybody shed any light on the subject. It used to work a long time ago(September 2006), and I have only been able to set up the internet access again this week.

Re: Email problems
That suggests you are not on an (ex-)ntl connection, but without at least part of the IP address that is being rejected it is impossible to be sure.

Re: Email problems
So do you have to be on an NTL connection to send e-mail usinig the SMTP server? Because I've had the same error message when trying to send e-mail away from home (ie not on an NTL connection). I can recieve mail and Webmail works but I would really like to be able to use Microsoft Outlook to send mail away from home. Maybe I need to supply a password somehow?

Re: Email problems
jonntl: you can only send mail through the ntl SMTP server from an ntl connection, otherwise, since the server does not use authentication, it would be acting as an open relay.
