Broadband through V+/TV Drive Box??

Hi All,
just been reading the excellent FAQs on the TV Drive Box and found this gem:

"Q: Can't I even have broadband through the TVDrive like I do with my current STB?
A: Nope. If you have broadband through the STB and you switch to TVDrive, NTL:Telewest will install a separate cable modem for you."

I currently get my 4MB BB through my Samsung STB. I have a V+ Box install booked for 16th Feb. When booking it the ntl call centre lady didn't mention I would be having a stand alone cable modem fitted at same time. Obviously bit worried now.....

Did she not say anything because:
a) the Samsung STB is being relocated to another room? (and i presume i can still run my BB from there - not problem really coz I use a wireless router.. or
b) cos it will all be arranged as part of install anyway.... or
c) cos she doesn't know about this?

Is there anyway I can contact Installations direct and check exactly what is on the job ticket? I don't have a reference number or anything confirming in writing (yet).

regards
Andy

Re: Broadband through V+/TV Drive Box??

I've seen someone else post on here, a telewest user I think, suggesting their broadband was via the TV drive. I think it's an unusual setup though.

I certainly wouldn't want my existing STB, moved to a different room and still doing the broadband. My cabling would be all wrong. TBH when I decide to go to tvdrive, one of the advantages to me would be that I'd hope to move to a modem, rather than STB based broadband, at the same time. That would let me get higher broadband speeds in the future when the STB can't support the 10meg services.

If you are at all concerned, phone customer services. They should be able to clarify.

Re: Broadband through V+/TV Drive Box??

thanks Rob
I'll gird my loins for a call to CS tmrw. Having said that when I called to order the TV Drive I got through without any queuing! Can never remember that happening before!

Always seems easier to talk to sales than it is support.

Strange that..........

Re: Broadband through V+/TV Drive Box??

Broadband isn't available through the DVR yet, and they will take your old box away for a charge of 75quid.

On the other hand, if they didn't say you were going to get charged, then that means you will be keeping your STB in another room, and that wil cost you an extra fiver.

I'm sure once all the bugs and stuff are fixed, they will move into putting broadband through the V+ DVR and then there will be no need to keep STB's.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but ontop of the £10 for the V+ box (£15 on smaller packages) another £5 will get put on your bill.

call em up tomorrow.

As far as I am aware, NTL are not supporting broadband through the STB in any new installs (V+ or not). It's too unreliable, and limits speed.

Re: Broadband through V+/TV Drive Box??

yes, but I believe that this person already has a STB and that won't take long to move to another room, and keep the BB going through that STB.

at least that's what I think will happen. that's what's happening with me!

Re: Broadband through V+/TV Drive Box??

Phoned ntl today. Customer Services weren't sure whether the TV Drive/V+ box could handle broadband, or whether relaocted box would continue or if a stand alone cable modem is needed.

Was put through to Sales who confirmed straightaway:

a) V+ Box cannot deliver Broadband
b) Relocated/Second STB will hot be able to provide Broadband signal
c) A stand alone cable modem (SACM) is required

What was worrying was when the job ticket was checked there was no mention there that a SACM was needed!!! So glad I rang now.

I appreciate it is early days for the V+ box BUT staff taking calls and booking installations must know what they are dealing with otherwise there will be many confused and angry customers.

Hope this information will be of use to others ordering the V+ Box.

regards
Andy

Re: Broadband through V+/TV Drive Box??

I currently have 2 Samsung boxes, one of which provides broadband. The other (non-BB) STB is scheduled to be replaced by a V+ box. When I placed my order, the guy mentioned that a cable modem might be required, but he wasn't sure. I assumed that the broadband would not be effected. It sounds like I need to book a cable modem install as well. Anyone know for sure ?

Re: Broadband through V+/TV Drive Box??

I don't get why an old STB wouldn't be available to brodband.

I get the 3 services from V and I don't want the hassle of hooking up my Wireless Network to something new!

Re: Broadband through V+/TV Drive Box??

No it doesn't make sense to me either. I can understand if the new V+ box cannot provide boradband, but what stops the existing Samsung box from providing broadband ?

Is there anyone on the forum with a TV Drive / V+ box installed who has their broadband through a 2nd STB ?

Thanks, Pete

I think you'll find that Broadband through the STB was unique to the former Cable & Wireless franchises. As part of the standardisation, and to provide the same service to all customers, the broadband through STB is no longer offered. The STB are not capable of the maximum speeds which are now on offer through NTL.

Re: Broadband through V+/TV Drive Box??

so basically, we need a new SACM along with STB MultiRoom and V+ Box?

will this make the speeds better?

Also, won't this be costing more, as Virgin will be giving out more equipment!?
