The following are restored when you use System Restore to restore your system to a previous time using a restore point:

Registry
Profiles (local only—roaming user profiles not impacted by restore)
COM+ DB
WFP.dll cache
WMI DB
IIS Metabase

Less of the grief man - im only trying to point out your inadequacies
Yeh yeh I should read the windows for dummies book too.

STILL this is not a method of restoring something as simple as a few codecs. Why rollback profiles too or is there an option to exclude them ?

Anyway I've had sys restore fail on me before - its not a robust solution nor does it answer

" How do you re-install broken codecs or for that matter ANY generic windows component "
