Msi 7600gs
Thinking about getting this. http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/119460
Main benefit to me is the fact it would be a return to a passively cooled one - it's silent, and I like that. Damn fan on my gfx card (6600) is quite loud which is annoying. I have decent case cooling so it shouldn't be a big deal.
Any card has to be AGP because I don't fancy upgrading anything else, and passively cooled for the quiet PC thing!
Is this chip going to be an improvement on the 6600? Any better, passively cooled AGP alternatives for the same, or similar price? I'm not a heavy frame-obsessed gamer btw.
Budget is 100 but could stretch to 125, would rather keep it Nvidia though.

Re: Msi 7600gs
Could you not just fit a different cooler to your existing card? Bound to be cheaper than replacing it for something that realistically isn't that much of a change.

It's a 6600 AGP. Fitting a Zalman to it is unfeasible, there isn't a quiet solution to it unless anyone can find it. Looked at a few Zalmans a while back and you have to do weird things with the cooler off the end of the card and stuff.
To be fair, the noise, or lack of it, would be the main pull towards the change as opposed to any increased gain...
How much difference in performance is there? You'd imagine looking at the numbers a 6600-7600 would be at least a slight difference, plus this board has twice as much RAM...

Re: Msi 7600gs
X1950 is ATI though?
How many PCIs does that cooler take? I have 5 and they're full. Apart from the one by the AGP slot which has to be empty.

yeah saw that I wouldnt recommend the GS version of the 7600 only the GT models are any good
EDIT I notice the graphics memory is only ddr II also on the GS I would steer clear of this card

Re: Msi 7600gs
Hmm and all the 1950s are PCI-E as well.
Just been looking on the nvidia site... the 7600 seems to do more per clock cycle than the good 6600s anyway. This 6600's only a LE anyway so that's basic.

Re: Msi 7600gs
And the difference between a GS and a GT is what? Not really a gfx expert. If it was clock speed, I'd merely O/C it.
---------- Post added at 23:58 ---------- Previous post was at 23:57 ----------
Both those GTs are more - though the cards themselves are within the 125, they're not when you factor in the new cooling.

And in real terms, how much of a difference would that be considering I have PC3200 DDR system RAM on a single core socket 754?

Re: Msi 7600gs
well its the difference between buying a decent card or a crap one for 100 quid. If your not overly bothered buy the GS if you are

Re: Msi 7600gs
It's got to be better than the 6600LE though, surely? Even negating the noise.

Re: Msi 7600gs
please dont draw me into having to post anything positive about it yeah it will be better than the 6600 but not 100 quids worth
as ive posted in the past budgets are meant to be broken I always treat the first figure as a giggle the second is getting closer to realistic then the 3rd is absolute max lol .I would offer the same advice to anyone and as it will be the last legs of this machine make it a worthwhile upgrade.
You could find a passive cooler for what you have and save 80 or 90 quid towards something later,
