Crappy results from speedtest.net, but good from ADSLguide... why!?
Why is it, everytime i use speedtest.net, i aways get crappy results, usually sub 2mb speeds like this:
But when i use ADSLguide, i nearly always get speeds around 9.5Mb, like this!
Just curious that's all.... plus it would be nice to wave my e-penis in the way of a nice graphic saying: ZOMG 10Mb!!!!!!!!!

This is why I don't recommend web based tests..

peering most probably, also could be that particular speedtest site is under heavy load.
NTL's connection to the internet isnt one large pipe its dozens of seperate pipes heading off to various isps. So one of these pipes can get congested whilst the others remain fast flowing.

I'd just assume speedtest.net are confusing their kB/s with their kb/s, and those speeds are spot on

If you traceroute the networks that you're running the speedtests against you will see what Chrysalis is talking about.
If it's International sites, I think Level3 provides most of the transit via multiple circuits from London and Manchester? Someone more in the know will be able to clarify I'm sure.

best speedtest is downloading something from ftp.mirror.ac.uk (linux downloads all legit) go for at least a 100meg file otherwise it'll be gone before you know it.

You should just be able to do:
tracert www.speedtest.net
That should give you the results you need. I've also noticed slow connections to certain sites, maybe some traffic shaping or just simple congestion in certain parts of NTL's routes?

Not necessarily, places like ST.net use multiple servers to provide the dummie files (and might be in a completely different location)

an additional problem with these speedtests sites relevant to ntl (not telewest) is that a congested proxy will skew the results.
