Re: Sky Broadband

Sky Broadband is ADSL. They don't do a broadband by satellite service. Some companies do, but the speeds are quite low, and it's expensive.

As for the speed, Sky can only offer the 16 meg service where they have installed equipment in the exchange. Obviously they have upgraded your exchange.

Also, one thing to note, it's actually UP TO 16 meg..

Re: Sky Broadband

I will be moving home in about a months time

I currently have NTL

In new place (apartment) I can connect to either Sky or NTL. I have decided to go with Sky cause I can get free broadband - plan to get the 'middle package' - dont need the max one.

Is the connection good - I have heard ppl having probs with the carphone warehouse talk talk free broadband and also probs with the orange one

thanks

Re: Sky Broadband

talk talk is renouned for being ****. orange is formerly wanadoo and in some instances is also **** due to the abysmal LLU fiasco that has been going on.

sky uses the ukonline LLU method which I believe is ok. as it is backed by SKY I would expect they could not afford the bad publicity of poor connections.

Re: Sky Broadband

There's an article you might want to read over at The Reg... here's a link:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/11..._tech_support/

The title of the article is "Sky Broadband users speak out about support woes - Free, but failing"... guess you can guess what the tone of the article is about already

Re: Sky Broadband

I suggest you goto samknows and get the crow distance, if its anything above 1km straight line then you may have problems hitting 8mbit, if its above 2km you will likely have problems getting more then 4mbit.

Re: Sky Broadband

not really they advertise upto 16meg since thats a realistic max, someone next door to the exchange would probably get 16-18mbit very few people get even close to 20mbit.

25% of people or there abouts can get 16mbit speeds on adsl2+ the bulk of people will be lower then 8mbit.

I am not next to the exchange and I sync at 18.2mb.

Plus i have seen a Attn of 45db obtain a 8mb speed on ADSL2+ and thats a estimate of 3km line distance.
I have just found out though that your line is poor. Dont go by your poor results and a result for everyone

Re: Sky Broadband

My data comes from what BT released not long ago published on adslguide.

8meg on 45db is not average it is very lucky.

Data provided by BT shows 25% of lines able to get 8meg on adsl1 they then used the data provided from BE's graph to give estimated capabilties on adsl2+

Now there will be lines that break this trend some will perform better and some will perform worse but there is an average.

My line is actually over performing for a line with 50 attenuation if I had the average synch for my loop loss I would only be getting 1.5mbit.

Re: Sky Broadband

I have been scouting about and found some people with a attn of 58db on a 3mb down and 768k up.

Why is your line so bad that you automatically condemn everyone elses to the same level?

how far are you to the exchange, what i find weird in my area, is that when you put the exchange post code on a speed checker it says maximum 7.6mbs but sky says they enabled with 16MB etc blah blah, my line says maximum 3MB but sky let me sign up for max, shouldnt it only be hte free and mid?
