BBC websites kill broadband connection

When I go to some BBC sites (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/onthewaterfront/pip/fwego/) and thir weather site. My modem drops out and reboots.

And it only happens when I go though my Netgear RP114 router.

Re: BBC websites kill broadband connection

I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to give a solution. I can just agree that with my Netgear router (can't remember the model number) if I try and hit the BBC Weather site when connected with wireless, the connection dies. If I'm connected with a wire, or I piggy back off my neighbour's Linksys router (!), then all is fine. If I'm wireless and VPN into work's network and use their internet connection then it works as well. It must be something to do with the Netgear.

I tried various settings around the SSID, WEP, WPA etc, but to no avail.

Re: BBC websites kill broadband connection

This has been happening to me for a long time as well. Seems to only be through my router as well.

Strange that it is only the BBC sites. Its only when I try and view any streaming media.

No problem using a Linksys router and NTL 250 modem. Have you tried checking the Netgear website to see if an updated firmware is available for your router?

Re: BBC websites kill broadband connection

This has been happening for sometime now with BBC Weather via our Belkin router. It seems to be intermittent, and drops wireless and wired. It does seem that only port 80 traffic is disrupted.

I believe there was a thread some months ago about this problem.

I have the latest firmware release according to the Belkin web-site.

I just get my weather forecast from elsewhere now.

Re: BBC websites kill broadband connection

had a similar problem with a netgear wirless router and the bbc site whereby we had to reboot the router. this only happened when viewing wirelessly and as soon as the router "bombed out" access wasn't available via the wired pc either. this also happened accessing a runboard forum that i run.

We had less of a problem using firefox so used that for the forum and bbc.

things are better now we after we adjusted the security settings (the wife did it whilst i was at work, she found out what to do after googling and looking at netgear forums!!)

Try specifying a proxy, because my router does this on some sites so I specify I proxy on port 8080 (Guilford 1 I think) which works fine. My router is a 5 year old Belkin Wireless G

I've been using various proxies for years because of the transient Yahoo mail problem

Re: BBC websites kill broadband connection

The bbc issue may be linked to realplayer as it happened to us till I went to the Routers support site and updated my firmware. Can now stream BBC video without any issues at all now.
