Can I change my cable modem?
A friend has lent me his ntl:250 modem which he doesn't use any more, and I thought I'd use it to replace my old silver ntl:100 modem.
Would it be a problem if I just connected it? Or would I need to register it somehow...?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Can I change my cable modem?
Sorry, there is no way that you can use your friends old modem.
Your modem is registered to your account & your friends is registered to his.
If your friend has cancelled his BB he should have returned the modem.
The only way to get a new modem is if your current modem becomes faulty.

Re: Can I change my cable modem?
As above, best get your friend to ask NTL if they want their equipment back as it's no good to you. Is there a reason you are wanting to switch out your modem?

Re: Can I change my cable modem?
The main reason is that it's a lot newer than mine, so maybe performance will be better. Also, when I was on 10 meg, the modem used to reboot a lot.
So if ntl don't want the ntl:250 back, can I ring CS and get them to register that modem to my account?

Re: Can I change my cable modem?
Erm no, AFAIK it can be done but it rarely is since people aren't supposed to keep modems etc. Your friend should keep the modem for a certain amount of time and then tell NTL he will dispose of it if they don't collect it.

Re: Can I change my cable modem?
when i went up to 10 meg i asked for a new modem, i had an old surfboard and tried to give it back to the engineer but he didnt want it, anyway obviosly i couldnt simply us the install cd to change them over.
one advantage of getting broadband before the easy setup came along was i knew that i could phone up ntl tech and tell them to deregister my old cm mac and gave them the new one, took 10 mins, about 5 of which was the call system.
having dealt with ntl i personally wouldnt bother them with info such as it being your friends old modem etc and justs ask to speak to tec, tell them youve been given a new modem and would like to swap the mac over. also hold on to your old modem.

oh i should add if you just plug it in then it will still be your friends modem on his account, if he is still paying the bill the internet would probably work for a little while till their security system start thinking you have cloned someones modem and you get a phone call.
if he has stopped paying the bill and ntl dont want it back nothing will happen till the mac is tied to an active account

Re: Can I change my cable modem?
Thanks for the info. Assuming my ntl say they don't want the modem back, I'll give it a go. Is it broadband tech support that I should ring, rather than normal customer services...?

Re: Can I change my cable modem?
I've just had mine done - however its taken weeks to sort out. CS/TS have difficulty understanding what is going on. And I had to wait until my gilfriends account had been deactivated before the MAC is released so that it can be added to my account.
However - Its just been done and i need to go home and check that it works!!!! If its still not working then I'll give up and stay with my old modem.
(I'm on 4mb, girfriend on 2mb)
As soon as i plugged the new modem in, was on 2mb - her account was still activated. My modem no longer responded but still lit up its lights. Her account went off yesterday so hopefully it will all work tonight at 4mb
