i have this installed on my pc, but before i had norton. when using the file transfer in msn messenger, norton would automatically scan for threats. but every time now someone tries to send me something it says virus scan failed. check tools and file transfer. on doing that i noticed that "myprogs/norton etc" was still in the path to scan stuff, so i pressed browse to find avg double clicked on that and am wondering with part of it i should click on to make it scan files. i found avg scan.exe and clicked on that, it scanned something and let it through, a little black box came up in the corner with command line yiykes that looked scary and went so quick i couldnt see what it said!! do you think i did the right thing?

Part of the problem is that you probably have not fully removed Norton. That program is notorious for the way it attaches itself to your PC, and the uninstall routines don't get it all. Can't find them at the moment but I know there are links on here as to the best way to get rid of it. Then you can sort out AVG's settings.

actually i believe what the OP is asking is what are the commandline arguments that he needs to tell MSN to pass to AVG to make it scan the recieved file

That may be so, but if remnants of Norton are still on the system, which is very likely they could be interfering with AVG's setup (it should be setup to scan msn automatically).

Go for a methodical approach, so ensure Norton has been removed first.

What MSN are you using 7.5 of live - I have a virtual box that I can test this out on for you jane

The on access scanner will of course scan files recieved from msn

But in the Msn messenger preferences its possible to specify which av software you wish MSN to invoke an ondemand scan of the file with on comlpetion of a filetransfer

in order to do this you'd need to know the full path to the scanners .exe files and the paraimters which need to be passed to the av scanner to make it scan the file

personaly i never bother as the on access scanner should take care of any viruses in incoming file transfers anyway so whats the poinnt of scanning it again with the ondemand scanner

In that case it should be the scanning engine that WinRar uses.

I have just installed AVG 7.5 free; winrar uses the following path

C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG free\avgscan.exe

i have used the norton tool before to try to get rid of all the remenants, and as soon as i booted back up my cpu would be at 100% and the fan would go nuts, the only way to stop it was to use system restore. as far as i know all of avg works fine, ive had no probs with it, i put that path name into the msn file transfer sanning field and it does scan and let things come through so that should be fine too i hope!! if i look in the event viewer, every day something called norton auto protect tries to load but cant find the path! obviously because i uninstalled the bugger!! not sure how to stop it from doing this though. it dosent seem to cause any problems, i only know its happening cause im always looking for errors in the event viewer!! on doing a search for symantec and norton, about 8 files were found. 2 of them cookies. i dont know if i should just try and delete them or just leave well alone as they dont seem to be causing any conflict. what do you think? im definately not using the norton removal tool as that seemed to cause HUGE problems!

Looks like you are still infected with Norton

From the link I provided above your next step is this download tool - for failed un-installations with the automatic removal tool:

Please back-up all your personal data, word files, emails etc to a cd or USB stick before doing this

Also ensure you have your Windows XP cd - in case things go wrong. Follow the instructions exactly to remove the product.

In addition to the files you have found, you will also have registry entries which this manual tool should remove.

im really wary of using any norton removal tool as i used the online one and the manual download one which really messed things up

I would use CCleaner to remove any left overs, once done boot into safe mode and delete any remaining folders in "program files" and then rerun ccleaner, reboot and be happy

Although this won't take account of the orphaned registry entries

CCleaner has a registry cleaner

Which has known issues, and has been known to remove critical registry entries. It is also not very thorough, but i am not a fan of automatic registry cleaners anyway

this is the message i get every day in the event viewer, where do i go to stop norton even trying to start this auto protect when i have uninstalled it lol
preferably without using any of the norton removal tools or registry cleaner as i just seem to make things worse. this error dosent seem to cause any problems but i bet it will only be a matter of time. if you dont think it will cause any problems i will just leave well alone
