Also worth mentioning that the Sky+ HD package is £299 for the box AND £10 per month regardless of channel subscriptions so this looks good value* compared to that.

However if one has not gone down the HD route at home then as a straight Sky+ competitor this doesn't look great.

*always assuming there is sufficient HD content

Multiroom is only £5 per month if you have the PVR so it would be:
£05.00 Multiroom
£37.50 Family pack + Sport
£10.00 TVDrive
£52.50 Total

Which should be the same as you are paying now!

Re: Is there an NTL PVR?

I would have thought that asking for a £75 fee up front would be somewhat off-putting to a lot of people. It would make more sense (to me at least) to spead that out over the 12 months of the contract period, at an additional £12 pcm - then revert to the standard pricing.

Why? You have to fork out at least £99 with sky up front for the +box.

And if you do have Sport and/or Movies... it's more expensive.

I hope my bill's multiroom is reduced down to £5 when it happens then too.

Think i will wait for something official anyway, no point getting peeved yet! Maybe they will surprise us!

I thought NTL were not going to charge the £10 if you had Sports and Movies.

If its the case then it will make a big difference in costs and if the TVdrive is HD at that cost.

NTL
£0 up front. (whoop de f'ing doo)
£10x36=£360

and every month you have it on ntl, the price difference goes up and up and up and up.. The only way you'd be better off with NTL would be if you cancelled your contract after 9 months.

I rest my case.
I forgot that seeing as I'm a loyal NTL customer I get charged an extra £75 for my loyalty as opposed to joe shmo getting it for free.

Hmm..

To reiterate:-

Sky+
£99 up front.
£0x36 = £0
£99+£0=Ãà ¢â‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£99

NTL TV Drive
£75 up front.
£10x36=£360
£75+£360=ÃƒÆ ’‚£435

based on having all the channels obviously.

What is the monthly rate for a full package on Sky and NTL at the moment? I have them all and it's about £50 for NTL isn't it?

£44 - £19.50 family pack and £24.50 sports and movies.

I'm guessing also that if you already have an additional stb then you will end up getting the main one swapped for the TVdrive and the cost of the second will reduce to £5 (£10 if not on family)

If that is the case, then that's much fairer.

However, it might be prudent to wait for the official announcement and prices...

Re: Is there an NTL PVR?

The pricing should be compared to the Sky HD service, rather than just Sky+. Sky HD is also £10/month on top of £299 for the box. So...

Sky HD
£299 up front.
£10x36 = £360
£299+£360=à ƒâ€šÃ‚£659

NTL TV Drive
£75 up front.
£10x36=£360
£75+£360=ÃƒÆ ’‚£435

The TV Drive is sold as a HD service. Sky+ doesn't have any HD capabilities.

A.

So if you have the PVR do you have to pay any extra to receive the HD channels ??

Re: Is there an NTL PVR?

You can't compare this announcement to Sky HD because NTL haven't announced any HD channel or content full stop have they?

Therefore we can't assume there won't be any additional charge once they do officially introduce it.

theres loads of info as the tvdrive has been in use on the telewest part for ages (that being relative OC), the long thread http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=47732 gives some info and insight

it seems clear that your NOT getting this http://www.scientificatlanta.com/cus...ce/7009100.pdf
anymore, but times moving on and a Euro-DOCSIS 2.0-compliant cable modem isnt going to be that good an investment for the future now that a Euro-DOCSIS 3.0-compliant cable modem is needed RSN, and its a good excuse to coverup the unwillingness of investers to finance this or another new STB for the time being, perhaps the next owners will put in the proverbial pot.

what DOCSIS does the tvDrive have again , i forget?.

its a shame NTL:tw dont let you or allow 3rd partys to sell you a DVB-C [HD]PVR and connect it to the NTL:tw Network as pace would love to sell you one im sure, they know a lot about the NTL:tw nework requirments and i assume they have now had enough insight to include the old Mpeg2 codec along side the latest industry backed AVC/H.264 codec so you could play any of the transport streams just as sky boxs can today

Pace launches High Definition PVR for Cable & Satellite

Digiturk announced as first customer
IBC 2006, Amsterdam, Stand 1.221, 8 September 2006: The ultimate way to enjoy high definition television will be launched today by Pace Micro Technology plc (LSE:PIC), the leading independent developer of digital TV technologies for the global payTV industry, at IBC2006.
Pace is launching its cutting-edge high definition (HD) personal video recorder (PVR) platform, the TDx850, in both satellite (TDS850) and cable (TDC850) versions.
Satellite HD PVR
The TDS850 comes with H.264 decoding and triple tuners, as well as Dolby Digital Plus for the ultimate HD experience. Dual DVB-S2 tuners enable the user to watch one channel while recording another or record two channels while watching stored content. The third tuner is DVB-S compliant to enable a dedicated push-VOD service and enhanced electronic programming guide (EPG).
The TDS850 has recently been selected by Digiturk to launch its HD service in Turkey next year. The TDS850IDI comes with in-built Irdeto conditional access and OpenTV middleware."

just to top it off "Content can then be securely distributed to other approved IP-enabled devices around the home, such as a PC, mobile unit or another IP set-top box" sounds interesting and wireless as standard no less(isnt [HD] encoded AVC over wireless great ), and everyones going to be doing it RSN, well, perhaps not everyone .

Pace showcases new Hybrid Satellite IPTV platform and pure IPTV solution

* Satellite-IP hybrid set-top box unveiled
* Launch of Pace`s H.264 IPTV reference platform
IBC 2006, Amsterdam, Stand 1.221, 8 September 2006: Pace Micro Technology plc (LSE:PIC), the leading independent developer of digital TV technologies for the global payTV industry, is showcasing its most advanced IPTV developments to date at IBC2006.
The best of both worlds - going hybrid
For satellite operators looking to compete more effectively in the changing TV landscape, Pace has developed a satellite-IP hybrid set-top box. This hybrid set-top box can take both HD and standard definition (SD) content from satellite and IP sources, enabling a range of live broadcast and VOD options.
Content can then be securely distributed to other approved IP-enabled devices around the home, such as a PC, mobile unit or another IP set-top box, using both wired and wireless connections. With an embedded hard drive, stored content can also be securely accessed through the IP network."
