my bad, they are linked apps and share the same code, i meant to say Drive Image Pro, not Partition Magic [Pro]

The only things that really could be causing this is software problems, a bad HD or RAM, or a corrupt driver. RAM has already been eliminated and a bad HD will probably have other symptoms especially as event viewer has been checked.
All points to a reformat though OP could also try safemode and diag startup from Msconfig (remembering to go offline before doing so) to try and point it further.

Long story, and one i don't particularly want to discuss in the forums - basically found a better job, applied for it and got it. No more gory details need discussing.
This job is fixing by remote desktop which is an awful lot easier and less stressful.
